When and where did they perform?
The performance took place at Carter’s state funeral at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., on January 9, 2025. The White House pool report places “Imagine” after the Gospel reading and homily and before the prayers and commendation.
What did Brooks and Yearwood say about the funeral?
In an account published on Brooks’s official website, he said of the invitation: “I am not sure there can be a greater honor.” Yearwood described saying goodbye and thanking Carter in the Capitol rotunda as “one of the most powerful moments I’ve ever experienced.” These are the artists’ own statements about the occasion.

What lawsuit was reported before the performance?
The Associated Press reported on October 3, 2024, that a former employee had filed a lawsuit alleging Brooks sexually assaulted her in an alleged 2019 encounter. Brooks denied the allegations. The complaint presents the plaintiff’s claims; it is not an independent finding of fact. The sources cited here establish that the lawsuit filing preceded the January funeral performance, but do not establish that the litigation affected the performance or the funeral program.
