Gangstalking Forums Can Offer Support—and Reinforce Distress

Gangstalking forums can provide peer support and sympathetic challenges, yet also reinforce persecutory beliefs. Research documents forum discourse, not proven clinical outcomes.

Gangstalking forums can help people feel less alone while also strengthening frightening interpretations of what is happening to them. Research documents this tension in how forum members communicate; it does not prove that participating causes a particular person’s symptoms or establishes that alleged coordinated surveillance is occurring.

How support and reinforcement can coexist

For someone who feels watched or targeted, a forum may offer an immediate sense of recognition: other people listen, share experiences, and respond with care. That support can matter even when the forum’s shared explanation for those experiences is uncertain.

The risk is that agreement can make one explanation feel increasingly certain. Members may reinforce persecutory beliefs or connect them to broader conspiracy narratives. A community can therefore be welcoming in its interpersonal tone while still nudging people toward interpretations that intensify fear.

The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), in its August 28, 2024 explainer, describes both sides of this dynamic: mutual support and belief reinforcement. It also reports that some users offer counterevidence and challenge beliefs sympathetically, including people who identify as former “targeted individuals” (TIs). The community is not uniformly an echo chamber, and a person trying to help does not necessarily make every forum interaction safe or constructive. What the direct forum study found—and what it did not

A 2021 mixed-methods study by Andrew Lustig and colleagues analyzed a 225,000-word corpus of posts from one gangstalking support forum. The researchers examined how contributors constructed, developed, and contested the belief system through language and interaction. The study in the Journal of Medical Internet Research

That work offers direct evidence about discourse in the forum studied, including competing rhetorical positions. It is not a representative sample of every forum or user: the corpus size is a word count, not a count of participants. The study did not randomly assign people to use a forum, track clinical outcomes, or establish that forum participation caused distress, delayed treatment, or changed anyone’s beliefs.

What broader mental-health forum research adds

Research on online mental-health peer-support forums—not specifically gangstalking communities—helps explain why these spaces can be both valuable and difficult to make safe. A 2024 realist synthesis identifies informational and social support as potential benefits, while noting the challenge of balancing openness and anonymity with rules that protect users. Its authors call for further research into when online peer support has positive or negative effects. The 2024 realist synthesis

A 2025 realist evaluation of online mental-health forums describes sensitive moderation and the sharing of lived experience as factors that can support interpersonal safety. These findings offer context for thinking about forum design; they are not proof of outcomes in TI communities. The 2025 realist evaluation

What helpful responses can look like

Support does not require confirming an unverified account of persecution. A response can take distress seriously without presenting the person’s explanation as established fact. For moderators, members, or someone supporting a distressed friend, useful questions include:

  • Does the response show empathy without affirming an unverified claim of coordinated surveillance?
  • Does it leave room for alternative explanations, or make the frightening interpretation sound more certain?
  • Do forum rules and moderation protect users while allowing honest discussion?
  • Does the exchange help the person connect with support outside the forum, rather than making the forum their only source of reassurance?

These are practical questions, not a validated test of whether a particular forum is harmful. ISD also notes that self-published books aimed at self-identified TIs appear in these communities; their presence does not establish that they are accurate, clinically helpful, or safe to recommend.

How to read claims about gangstalking forums

People’s fear and distress deserve respectful attention. That is distinct from verifying the explanation they give for those feelings. The available evidence supports a careful conclusion: one forum’s posts show how contributors built and contested a shared belief system, and expert analysis describes support alongside possible reinforcement. Neither establishes how common harm or benefit is, or proves that any individual’s alleged surveillance has occurred.
