Geese made Getting Killed by heading to Los Angeles with a pile of unfinished ideas and giving themselves room to find out what those ideas could become. In Hanna Jokic’s August 26, 2025 feature, the Brooklyn band describes a deliberately open-ended recording process with producer Kenneth Blume, better known as Kenny Beats. A later interview adds a revealing contrast: the band found it easier to focus away from New York, while saying the internet—not the city they grew up in—had more influence on their music.
Getting Killed began with unfinished ideas
Geese arrived in Los Angeles in early January with about 20 demos, according to Hanna Jokic’s August 26, 2025 feature. Few sounded like complete songs. Rather than simply polish a set of finished arrangements, the band worked with producer Kenneth Blume in a process that left room for the material to develop in the studio.
Partisan Records describes the album as tracked in Blume’s Los Angeles studio over ten fast-paced days. The feature’s account of the demos and the label’s description of the sessions offer two views of the same approach: a substantial amount of raw material, then a concentrated recording period. Blume is also known as Kenny Beats; the album is listed as a 2025 Geese release on the Partisan Records artist page and Apple Music.
Why the handclap story captures the sessions
One studio anecdote from Jokic’s feature makes the band’s attention to detail—and its willingness to get sidetracked—easy to picture. Cameron Winter recalled that Blume “pulled up 7,000 claps.” The musicians spent the day choosing one. Winter summed up the detour: “We spent all day choosing a clap,” then, “We forgot to make the song.”

The quotes are funny, but they also show how the record’s process could turn a tiny sound into a major creative decision. The feature does not frame the session as a formula or a technical recipe; it presents the handclap search as one glimpse of the choices the band and producer were willing to explore.
Blume helped the band move beyond familiar labels
Blume described Geese as a band that had been put into several boxes: “They’ve been put in this jam-band space. They’ve been put in this ‘smart kids in New York who play instruments good’ space. They’ve been branded in all of these different ways. And they really wanted to say something different with this music.”
That perspective puts the album’s open-ended sessions in context. The goal was not simply to reproduce a recognizable image of a young New York guitar band. Instead, the group wanted the music to say something different from the labels that had gathered around it.
Recording in Los Angeles gave Geese distance from home
In an April 10, 2026 interview with Indie Rocks!, the band said recording outside New York helped them concentrate and avoid distractions from friends and family. The location was useful less as a new musical identity than as a way to get distance from everyday life and focus on the work.

Asked whether New York shaped the band’s sound, the members said they felt more influenced by the internet than by the city where they grew up. That answer complicates the easy assumption that a band’s hometown explains its music: for Geese, the city could be home without being the strongest influence they identified.
From an after-school band to Getting Killed
Jokic’s feature traces Geese’s beginning to 2016, when the members were still in high school and started playing together through an after-school rock program. It names Cameron Winter, Max Bassin, Emily Green, and Dominic DiGesu. The article places Projector (2021) and 3D Country (2023) among the group’s earlier milestones before turning to the making of Getting Killed.

By the time of the later Indie Rocks! interview, the band was reflecting on almost ten years together. Its members said staying together had become meaningful, and that the band’s development had been unexpected. The passage of time does not make the group’s path feel inevitable; the musicians themselves describe it as something they had not anticipated.
