Seeing Fury Road first can make the returning world and character references more familiar, but it is context—not a prerequisite.
Why Furiosa works without a Fury Road refresher
Furiosa tells an earlier part of Furiosa’s life rather than continuing the events of Fury Road. ABC News describes it as a prequel mapping her earlier life and the harsh world she inhabits: ABC News. That origin-story framing makes it a reasonable entry point if it is the film you want to watch.

George Miller said the story of Furiosa existed before the team filmed Fury Road. In a National Board of Review Q&A on May 23, 2024, he said, “This is quite different in that we had the story, as you know, of Furiosa before we shot Fury Road”: National Board of Review. That background supports treating the prequel as a story in its own right, not as a film that assumes a recent rewatch.
What watching Fury Road first adds
A prior viewing gives you the later version of Furiosa and the world she inhabits as a point of comparison. Miller described Furiosa as the first Mad Max film that had to allude to a previous film—Fury Road—in its design, characters, and world because it was a prequel. He made that comment in a Los Angeles Times interview published August 25, 2022: Los Angeles Times.

That connection can make details and echoes more recognizable, but it does not mean you need to know them to follow the origin story. Choose Fury Road first if you want its context fresh; choose Furiosa first if that is the film you are in the mood to see.

The films can be watched in either order for the purpose of understanding Furiosa; the choice is about which context you prefer, not a required preparation step.
