The appointment was announced on August 12, 2025. The loss is a historical figure from that quarter, not a description of Funko’s current financial performance.
Who is Funko’s new CEO?
Josh Simon became Funko’s chief executive officer on September 1, 2025, and joined the company’s board that day. He succeeded interim CEO Mike Lunsford, who held the interim role through August 31 and continued as a director. Funko announced Simon’s appointment on August 12; the company’s announcement and an SEC Form 8-K document the appointment and timing.

What did Josh Simon do at Netflix?
Simon spent more than five years at Netflix, serving as vice president of consumer products from March 2020 through August 2025, according to Funko’s SEC filing. Funko said he oversaw global merchandise, live experiences, and the Roald Dahl Story Company, helped build and scale the consumer-products division, and launched Netflix’s first e-commerce platform for consumer products. The company also credited him with managing retail relationships and overseeing more than 40 experiences across 300 cities. Funko’s SEC filing provides his employment background.
Before Netflix, Simon held senior roles at Nike from 2015 to 2020 and worked at Disney from 2000 to 2006, according to the filing. Funko’s announcement also notes earlier work at Color Force Productions, a DreamWorks-based production company. These roles establish experience across entertainment and consumer products; they do not, by themselves, establish a specific turnaround plan or its results.

Why was Funko reporting a loss when it named a new CEO?
GeekWire’s August 13, 2025 report described Funko as having posted a roughly $41 million loss in the second quarter immediately preceding the appointment announcement. That is a rounded characterization of the reported quarterly loss. GeekWire also said Funko had lost $61 million in the first six months of 2025, attributing that six-month comparison to the Daily Herald. Those figures explain the financial context around the leadership change, but they are not current results. GeekWire’s report covers the appointment and the loss figures.

In its August 6, 2026 results release, Funko reported second-quarter net sales of $207.7 million, up 7% from $193.5 million a year earlier, and net income of $15.4 million, compared with a $40.5 million loss in the prior-year quarter. Adjusted EBITDA was $40.9 million versus negative $16.5 million. These are company-reported year-over-year figures.

Interpret those improvements alongside an important qualification: Funko said gross margin, net income, adjusted net income, and adjusted EBITDA each included a $25.4 million pretax benefit related to the recognition of expected tariff refunds and the release of accrued tariffs. The release reiterated full-year net-sales guidance of flat to up 3% and raised adjusted EBITDA guidance; both are forecasts, not realized full-year results.
