The ceremony’s most memorable moments
“I’m Just Ken” brought Barbie to the stage
Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson performed “I’m Just Ken,” the nominated song from Barbie. ABC included the performance among the ceremony’s highlights. Its theatrical scale made it one of the night’s defining pieces of showmanship. ABC’s ceremony highlights also feature host Jimmy Kimmel’s welcome, the In Memoriam, and acting-winner moments.
#1 Best Overall
Tributes balanced celebration with remembrance
The In Memoriam segment honored people from the film community who had died. The program also brought generations of acting winners together onstage, a moment AP noted in its account of the ceremony. Those tributes offered a more reflective counterpoint to the awards-show humor and performances.
John Cena turned the costume award into a comic bit
AP reported that John Cena presented the costume-design award in a comic sequence that recalled the streaker who interrupted the 1974 Oscars. The gag was among the broadcast’s deliberately irreverent moments.
Rank #2
Emma Stone’s acceptance had an unexpected wardrobe detail
AP reported that Stone’s dress broke before she won Best Actress for Poor Things. The incident added an unscripted wrinkle to an otherwise carefully staged ceremony.
The night’s setting included serious public issues
AP described a contrast between the ceremony’s comedy and somber themes, including calls for peace and Gaza cease-fire demonstrations outside the Dolby Theatre. These were part of the public context around the event, distinct from the awards themselves.

When and where did the 2024 Oscars take place?
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The ceremony honored movies released in 2023, so “2024 Oscars” refers to the ceremony year, not the year the honored films were released. ABC said at the time that it aired live on its network and in more than 200 territories worldwide. Its notice about limited-time on-demand access was historical and does not establish current availability. See ABC’s 2024 Oscars coverage for its broadcast information.
