Mamang Dai’s 2021 novel Escaping the Land traces the transition from the North East Frontier Agency (NEFA) to modern-day Arunachal Pradesh through fiction, memory and oral accounts. Dai has said that growing up in NEFA, before there was an Arunachal, and hearing family stories about the region shaped her writing.
What is Escaping the Land about?
The Arunachal Times reviewer describes Escaping the Land as a four-part narrative of the historical journey from NEFA to Arunachal Pradesh, blending fact, fiction and oral memories. That is a literary description of the novel’s scope, not a standalone administrative history of the territory.

Scroll’s January 2022 article published an excerpt with permission from Speaking Tiger. In it, a narrator returns to an old house and discovers a “NEFA NOTEBOOK.” The passage moves between remembered places and political life, reflecting on how villages and districts changed as roads and towns developed. These details belong to the novel’s narrative; they should not be read as independently verified reporting about a particular real location or event.
How Dai’s own memories inform the novel
Asked what inspired her to write about the formation of modern-day Arunachal Pradesh, Dai said: “I grew up in the erstwhile North East Frontier Agency (NEFA) when there was no Arunachal.” She recalled family stories of treks to remote outposts before roads and bridges, as well as stories of the 1962 Indo-China war, the 1950 earthquake and the 1953 Achingmori incident. These are Dai’s account of the memories and stories that informed her writing, rather than a complete account of those events.

In a separate interview with The Daily Pioneer, Dai remembered that “one posting was a six-day foot march through the dense jungle.” This is her recollection of one family posting, not a claim about every journey or family in the region.
Landscape and change in the excerpt
The Scroll excerpt makes landscape part of the narrator’s recollection: an old house and a notebook become points of entry into a changing social and political world. Its references to roads, towns, villages and districts give the passage a sense of change unfolding across lived places. The excerpt also brings in a veteran politician, linking personal memory with public life without turning the scene into a documentary chronology.
