The episode’s case for the revival is strongest when it lets that history collide with the present rather than asking nostalgia to do the work.
What happens in “Ham”?
In the season opener, Frasier discovers that Alan advised Freddy to drop out of college. That puts Frasier’s relationship with his son and his decades-long friendship with Alan on a collision course. The premise gives the episode two connected stakes: a father’s response to his son’s choices, and a friend’s anger at someone who may have crossed a line.

Paramount+’s official episode guide identifies “Ham” as Season 2, Episode 1 and describes the same conflict. Paramount Global Content lists the season premiere date as September 19, 2024, and describes the series as a 30-minute, multi-camera comedy.
Why the conflict gives the premiere comic potential
Friendship becomes the farce’s pressure point
Frasier and Alan’s long history makes the disagreement more than a disagreement over college. Friends who know one another well can anticipate each other’s arguments—and make a small breach feel like a much larger betrayal. That setup suits the revival’s older, more settled characters: their past can shape the present without being a substitute for it.

Freddy’s decision adds emotional stakes
The college question matters because it is Freddy’s life, not merely a device for Frasier and Alan to spar. Frasier’s reaction puts his instincts as a father under pressure: he has to contend with advice given to his son and with the possibility that Freddy’s path is not his to direct. The tension gives the comic disagreement something real to push against.
Clarity and timing still matter
A farce built around conflicting loyalties needs the audience to follow who knows what, who feels betrayed, and what each person wants. “Ham” has a clean central situation; the episode’s success depends on how effectively its scenes turn that situation into escalating comic complications rather than simply restating the dispute.

Does the premiere show that the revival is alive and well?
As an argument for the revival, “Ham” is more persuasive in its premise than any appeal to the original show’s reputation would be. The old friendship supplies comic friction, while Freddy’s choices give that friction a family consequence. That is a useful foundation for a new season: it lets the characters’ relationships generate the conflict.
The episode’s setup also points to a standard the revival still has to meet. Alan, Freddy, and the rest of the ensemble need room to be people with their own motives, not just the pieces that move Frasier into another argument. A strong central pairing can carry a premiere, but the broader cast’s contribution determines whether the world feels lively beyond that pairing.

How the season’s reception complicates the verdict
Season-level reception was mixed. Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 2 page includes sharply negative review excerpts and viewer comments, some criticizing how the revival handles its supporting cast. That is relevant context, but it is not an episode-specific assessment of “Ham” or a measured survey of viewers. It cautions against calling the revival universally embraced; it does not settle whether this particular premiere works.
