The disappointing update concerns the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End manga, not a cancellation or an announced delay to the anime: on October 14, 2025, the Weekly Shonen Sunday editorial department said serialization would pause after Chapter 147 while the publication pace and format were adjusted. It gave no return date. The anime has separate schedule news: Season 3 is announced for October 2027.
What is the Frieren manga update?
The Weekly Shonen Sunday editorial department announced on October 14, 2025, that the manga would go on hiatus starting with the next issue. The announcement followed consultation with writer Kanehito Yamada and illustrator Tsukasa Abe about their health. It said both creators remained at work and described the pause as a way to adjust the serialization schedule and publication format so the story could continue. ORICON NEWS reproduced the editorial statement.

The statement describes a temporary suspension, not a cancellation or permanent ending. It does not identify a diagnosis or provide private medical details, so there is no basis for speculation about the creators’ health beyond what the editors disclosed.
Where did the manga pause, and when will it return?
VIZ’s English listing dates Chapter 147 to October 14, 2025, making it the relevant chapter to point readers to in that catalog. That listing does not establish the latest Japanese magazine issue.

The editorial statement said details about the series’ return would be announced in future issues of Weekly Shonen Sunday, but it did not set a date. The available official announcement therefore gives no confirmed return date; an estimate would be speculation.
Does the manga hiatus affect the anime?
No connection between the manga pause and the anime schedule was announced. They are separate updates. The official anime website said on March 27, 2026, that Season 3, adapting the Golden Land arc, is scheduled for October 2027 on Nippon TV. The Season 3 announcement is not evidence that manga serialization has resumed. Nippon TV’s corporate lineup separately lists Season 2 in its January 2026 Friday Anime Night season. Nippon TV’s lineup provides broadcast-schedule context, not a manga return update.

What readers can do while waiting
Readers can check VIZ’s official series catalog for its listed manga volumes and published material. A catalog listing is not an announcement that new chapters have resumed. For a return date, the relevant update is a new notice from Weekly Shonen Sunday; the anime’s release schedule should not be used to infer one.
