“Frank Rosenthal Interview” can refer to more than one archival item. The most substantial transcript is PBS FRONTLINE’s interview with Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, included in Easy Money. A separate Vegas PBS Newsnight program is catalogued as “Rosenthal 1979.” They are distinct records, and the available archive description does not establish that they are the same recording.
Which Frank Rosenthal interview are you looking for?
| Record | What it contains | What the archive establishes |
|---|---|---|
| PBS FRONTLINE: “Interview – Frank ‘Lefty’ Rosenthal” | A transcript in the Easy Money materials, covering Rosenthal’s casino work, gambling and views on casino companies’ influence in Nevada. | The interview transcript identifies the speaker and provides Rosenthal’s answers. It is the more detailed text source among these records. |
| Vegas PBS Newsnight; Frank ‘Lefty’ Rosenthal | An archived program described as “Rosenthal 1979,” including an interview, stage magic and Siegfried & Roy at a dinner party. | The catalog description identifies the program as from 1979 but does not establish a precise broadcast date in the available record. The archive says the transcript was received from a third party and/or computer-generated and its accuracy has not been verified. |
If you want Rosenthal’s remarks in readable form, start with the FRONTLINE transcript. If you mean the Vegas PBS television program, use the archive listing to locate the recording; do not treat its unverified transcript as a reliable source for exact wording.
What Rosenthal discusses in the FRONTLINE transcript
Four properties and the Stardust
Asked about his casino work, Rosenthal says he was involved with four properties: Stardust, Fremont, Hacienda and Marina. He describes the Stardust as the command post. This is Rosenthal’s first-person account, not an independently audited corporate history.
What he found enjoyable about gambling
Asked what was fun about gambling, he answers: “The only part that’s fun about gambling is when you win.” The transcript presents this as Rosenthal’s own view, rather than a general claim about gamblers.

Casino companies and Nevada politics
Rosenthal says major casino operators “virtually own the politics in Nevada.” That is a forceful personal characterization of their influence, not a finding independently established by the interview transcript.

In a separate PBS Nevada Week interview, attorney and former Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman retrospectively calls Rosenthal a “genius” at setting up race and sportsbooks at the old Stardust. Goodman also credits him with bringing Siegfried & Roy to the property. These comments are Goodman’s assessment; they are not statements from either Rosenthal interview.
