Freddie Powell was justified in declining to marry Catherine Richards on the Love Is Blind: UK finale: he described serious doubts, differences and pressure after a relationship that had begun only weeks earlier. But the decision’s defensibility does not erase the hurt of rejecting Catherine at the altar, and her account of what viewers did not see makes any confident verdict on their private relationship impossible.
What happened at the wedding
Catherine said “I do”; Freddie declined to marry her. In its later cast update, Netflix Tudum reported that the pair were no longer together and had briefly tried again after the experiment. Their outcome is clear; the full private story behind it is not.
Why Freddie said no
He described doubts about their relationship
Freddie told Tudum that cracks appeared after they left the pods. He described Catherine as short-tempered, said he felt pressure and later said, “I felt a bit suffocated.” He also said time away from Catherine and the cameras helped him think for himself and reach clarity. These are his explanations, not independently established facts about every interaction between them.
The short timeline and the prenup
In a September 4, 2024 report, The Independent quoted Freddie saying he had known Catherine for three weeks when he raised a prenuptial agreement. He called it protection for both people and stood by asking for one, while acknowledging the conversation could have been worded better. A prenup does not prove that a couple is incompatible; in this context, it does show that Freddie was considering the practical stakes of marrying someone he had known for a very short time.

Freddie also framed his choice in terms of timing. Cosmopolitan reported that he said he loved Catherine but did not think the timing was right. Caring for someone and believing a marriage is a sound decision are not the same thing.
What Catherine’s account adds
Catherine said the audience had not seen everything that happened between them. In Tudum’s account, she alleged that Freddie said one thing to her family and friends and another to her off camera, and said this contributed to her insecurity. She summed up her view by saying, “There’s a very different side to Freddie.” That is Catherine’s account, not a finding that the available reporting independently verifies.

Her perspective matters because an edited finale cannot establish how clearly Freddie communicated his doubts before the wedding or resolve what happened in private. Tudum also quoted Freddie describing them as friends and saying, “I have a lot of love for her.” That later expression of affection does not settle the disagreement over their relationship.

On the central question—whether Freddie should have gone through with a marriage he doubted—no. A wedding commitment should not be made simply because a television experiment has brought a couple to the altar. Freddie’s stated concerns about their differences, the pressure and the pace give a reasonable basis for refusing to proceed.

The timing and the decision are separate questions. Catherine had said yes and was hurt by his refusal, so viewers can regard Freddie’s choice as justified while still criticizing how painful the moment was. The available accounts do not establish whether he could have given her clearer notice or whether her description captures every important exchange. The fairest verdict is therefore limited: declining marriage was defensible; a final judgment about who treated whom fairly requires more certainty about private events than these reports provide.
