Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Choose The Trial for a novel about an opaque legal system, or The Castle for an unfinished pursuit of inaccessible authority. Kafka’s books also include short-story collections, diaries, aphorisms, letters, and other documentary writing—so the right next book depends on whether you want fiction or a closer view of the writer’s life.
Where should you start with Kafka?
Pick a first book by length and subject rather than following a supposedly required order. Penguin Random House notes that Kafka published only a few short stories during his lifetime, including “The Metamorphosis,” “The Judgment,” and “The Stoker.” He was born in Prague in 1883 and died in 1924. Penguin Random House’s Kafka author page provides a useful overview of his life and books.
- For a short first read: The Metamorphosis, a practical entry point if you want a story rather than a novel.
- For a novel about unexplained accusation: The Trial, in which Josef K. is accused of a crime whose nature is not revealed to him.
- For a longer, unfinished story of exclusion: The Castle, about K., a land surveyor who cannot gain access to the castle or establish contact with his employer.
- For a broad selection of fiction: The Complete Stories, listed in the Schocken Kafka Library.
- For Kafka’s personal and documentary writing: try diaries, aphorisms, letters, or Letter to the Father.
This is a flexible path, not a scholarly reading order. The Penguin Random House catalogue and the Schocken Kafka Library catalogue list works across these forms.
What are Kafka’s best-known books?
The Metamorphosis
A short story and one of the few works Kafka published during his lifetime. It suits readers who want to begin with a compact piece before committing to a novel. The publisher’s author catalogue also lists “The Judgment” and “The Stoker” among his lifetime publications.
#1 Best Overall
The Trial
Josef K.’s unexplained accusation makes this the natural choice for readers drawn to systems of authority, uncertainty, and procedure. Kafka died before completing any of his full-length novels, according to Penguin Random House. The publisher lists a 2024 Penguin Classics paperback translated by Idris Parry, ISBN 9780241678893, with an introduction by Parry. See the publisher’s edition details for The Trial.
The Castle
In this unfinished novel, K. tries to reach the castle and make contact with his employer. Kafka left the manuscript unfinished in 1922; the novel was published in 1926, after his death. Schocken lists Mark Harman as translator of its edition. The publisher page offers paperback, hardcover, and ebook formats; publication details and ISBNs vary by format. Check the publisher’s The Castle listing.
Rank #2
Amerika: The Missing Person
Also listed in Kafka’s publisher catalogue, Amerika: The Missing Person is another option for readers who want to continue with his novels. As with The Trial and The Castle, it was not completed during Kafka’s lifetime.
Which Kafka books are not novels?
Kafka’s bibliography extends well beyond the three novels. The Schocken Kafka Library catalogue includes The Complete Stories, diaries, and aphorisms; Penguin Random House’s author catalogue also lists correspondence and other personal writing.

Which Kafka translation or edition should you choose?
There is no basis here for naming one translation as universally best. Compare the specific edition’s translator, editorial description, introduction or notes, language, and format. A publisher’s description tells you what that edition claims about its text; it does not establish that it is superior to every alternative.
| Book and edition | Translator | What the listing specifies |
|---|---|---|
| The Trial, Penguin Classics paperback (2024), ISBN 9780241678893 | Idris Parry | Includes an introduction by Parry. The product description says the Schocken edition is based on an international team’s work to restore the text, chapter sequence, and divisions toward the state Kafka left it. Publisher listing. |
| The Castle, Schocken edition | Mark Harman | The listing identifies the translation and offers paperback, hardcover, and ebook formats; publication dates and ISBNs vary by format. Publisher listing. |
Translation history also differs by language. The Franz Kafka Museum bibliography documents multiple Czech translations and editions of The Trial, The Castle, Amerika, and Letters to Milena. That history should not be treated as evidence about which English translation to buy. Consult the Franz Kafka Museum bibliography for its Czech publication records. Prices and stock can change, so check the edition listing or bookseller for current availability.

Kafka asked his friend and literary executor Max Brod to burn his unpublished work. Brod did not carry out that request. Kafka died before completing his full-length novels; The Castle was left unfinished in 1922 and published posthumously in 1926. Those facts help explain why readers encounter unfinished novels alongside stories and documentary writing in Kafka’s catalogue. Penguin Random House’s author biography summarizes the publication history.
