The posts appeared during the early-screening period before the film’s 2025 theatrical release. They explain why some viewers were excited, but they cannot establish that Marvel had made its best film.
Where the “best Marvel film ever” claim came from
Forbes traced the headline phrase to George McKay of Harpers Media, who wrote: “Quite possibly the best Marvel Studios film ever released. Absolutely loaded with talent and standout performances from Vanessa Kirby and Joseph Quinn. If you thought the MCU died with Endgame, think again. Thoughtfully crafted and easily a genre-defining classic.” The post was published before the film opened theatrically in 2025. Forbes reported the reaction on July 19, 2025.

That wording matters: “quite possibly” marks a personal impression, not a definitive ranking. Forbes also characterized the material it gathered as a set of unscored reactions from a mix of critics, influencers and early viewers. It was not a collection of formal reviews, and selected posts cannot measure what audiences as a whole thought.
What early viewers praised
The most consistent enthusiasm focused on the film’s visual identity and its people. Early posts praised its retro-futurist design and visual effects, Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm, the cast’s chemistry, the quartet’s family dynamic, cosmic imagery and emotional stakes. Those are recurring themes in the reactions, not independently established judgments about the film’s quality.

- Set against the backdrop of a ?60s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel?s First Family faces a daunting challenge. Forced to balance being heroes with their family bond, they must defend Earth from a space god and his enigmatic herald.
Forbes also reported Brandon Davis praising the visuals and saying some moments called for IMAX, while iOlsen highlighted Kirby and the family dynamic. The Indian Express described early praise for the direction, cast, visuals and emotional core. Matt Neglia, editor-in-chief of Next Best Picture, called it an “intriguing & satisfying first step” and “easily the best depiction of this quartet on-screen to date,” crediting director Matt Shakman’s storytelling. The Indian Express reported those reactions on July 20, 2025.
Several outlets reproduced overlapping social-media posts, so seeing the same praise quoted in more than one article does not make it independent confirmation. The reactions are useful as a snapshot of early excitement and the elements that excited those viewers—not as evidence of broad agreement.
What the film is about
Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps follows Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and the Thing as they defend Earth from Galactus and the Silver Surfer. Its principal cast includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Ralph Ineson as Galactus and Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer. The Independent’s July 21, 2025 report describes the film and its cast.
Contemporaneous coverage differed by one day on the theatrical release date: Forbes reported July 24, 2025, for the United States, while The Independent reported July 25. These are the dates those outlets gave, and they should not be collapsed into a single universal date. The reports do not establish current streaming or disc availability.

How later coverage changed the picture
A later assessment was more mixed than the most enthusiastic early posts. In a list updated August 6, 2025, TechRadar’s Tom Power placed The Fantastic Four: First Steps in the middle band of his MCU ranking. He praised the cast, the ’60s-inspired alternate-universe design, the score and the blend of cosmic scale with family feeling, while criticizing the runtime, underused villains, occasional tonal jolts and pacing. Read Power’s MCU ranking, updated August 6, 2025.
This is one writer’s editorial ranking, not a universal consensus. It differs from the early posts in both timing and method: a pre-release social reaction captures an immediate response, while a later ranking places the film alongside other MCU entries and weighs strengths against weaknesses. Neither should be mistaken for a single, definitive verdict shared by all viewers.
Does “return to form” mean Marvel is back?
Some early posts used “return to form” language, as reported by Forbes and the Indian Express. That phrase describes the optimism of those particular viewers during the early-screening period; it does not demonstrate a wider critical or audience consensus. The available reactions support a narrower conclusion: the film’s cast, visual style, family focus and emotional scale gave some early viewers reason to feel newly enthusiastic about the MCU.
