Flashback: Shelley Duvall Battles Jack Nicholson in The Shining’s Axe-Door Scene

In The Shining’s bathroom confrontation, Jack Nicholson’s axe work was the straightforward part, according to producer Jan Harlan. Shelley Duvall had to sustain Wendy’s terror as the door gave way.

In Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining, Wendy Torrance (Shelley Duvall) is trapped in a bathroom while her husband, Jack (Jack Nicholson), hacks at the door with an axe. The confrontation is remembered for Nicholson’s unnerving performance, but executive producer Jan Harlan later said the physical axe work was the simpler part: Duvall had to sustain the appearance of extreme fear.

What happens in the axe-door scene?

Jack attacks the bathroom door while Wendy retreats inside and tries to keep him out. The room offers her little space or protection; the damaged door makes the threat feel immediate. Nicholson’s Jack taunts Wendy through the opening, turning a domestic doorway into the boundary between temporary refuge and danger.

This is separate from the staircase sequence, in which Wendy uses a baseball bat to fend Jack off. The two scenes are often discussed together, but a reported take count for one cannot establish how many takes the other required.

What Shelley Duvall’s performance demanded

In a 2012 retrospective interview with The Guardian, executive producer Jan Harlan described Nicholson’s axe work as relatively straightforward: “Hacking down the door with an axe was peanuts. All he needed to do was make the wood crack well.” Harlan said Duvall had the harder task: she needed to look intensely frightened, and Kubrick repeatedly asked her to appear more afraid.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That is Harlan’s retrospective account, not a contemporaneous production log or a neutral measure of either actor’s work. It does, however, point to the scene’s contrast: the door’s destruction is a concrete effect, while Duvall’s fear has to register continuously as Wendy watches her refuge fail.

How many takes did the axe scene take?

The available accounts cited here do not establish a reliable take count for the axe-door confrontation. Precise figures often repeated about Kubrick’s filming concern other scenes, particularly the staircase baseball-bat sequence. They should not be reassigned to the bathroom scene without scene-specific evidence.

How the scene fits the film

AFI identifies The Shining as Kubrick’s 1980 Warner Bros. adaptation of King’s novel, with a screenplay by Kubrick and Diane Johnson. The film’s confined bathroom confrontation is one form of its unease: the danger is close and physical, yet it unfolds within the Overlook Hotel, a much larger, maze-like space whose meaning the film leaves unsettled. AFI’s film feature discusses the adaptation and production, while a 2012 BFI interview with Harlan describes ambiguity as intentional. Harlan recalled Kubrick’s principle this way: “Never try to explain something that you don’t understand yourself.”

A long production, not a scene-specific record

AFI’s production account places filming at Elstree Studios beginning in early May 1978 and describes principal photography as lasting roughly a year. It also reports that a set fire caused $2.5 million in damage and delayed production by three weeks. AFI’s catalog notes that historical trade reports disagree on some exact dates, so these figures provide broad context rather than a precise calendar for filming this scene. Neither the lengthy shoot nor those production delays reveal how many takes the axe-door scene required.
