Mia Love’s “My living wish for the America I know” was a first-person essay published by Deseret News on March 11, 2025, as her brain-cancer battle was nearing its end. The former U.S. representative framed it as a wish for the country, not a conventional goodbye: a call to preserve America’s promise through service, honest dialogue and neighbors helping one another.

What was Mia Love’s letter to America?

Love’s essay, titled “Mia Love: My living wish for the America I know,” appeared in Deseret News on March 11, 2025. Its byline identified her as a former U.S. representative for Utah’s 4th Congressional District. Writing in her own voice, Love described the essay as a “living wish” while her cancer battle was drawing to a close.

Her central idea was that America’s promise depends less on government than on the opportunities people give one another to contribute and do meaningful things. Love wrote: “The America I know is great — not because government made it great but because ordinary citizens like me, like my parents and like you are given the opportunity every day to do extraordinary things.”

What did Love want Americans to take from it?

Ordinary people make the country stronger

Love grounded her vision in people’s determination across different lives and kinds of work. The country’s strength, in her account, comes from people being able to pursue opportunity and from communities recognizing the contributions of their neighbors.

Division diminishes; care builds community

She put the contrast succinctly: “Some have forgotten the math of America — whenever you divide you diminish.” She set that against what she called a multiplying effect: “The goodness and greatness of our country is multiplied when neighbors help neighbors, when we reach out to those in need and build better citizens and more heroic communities.” Her appeal was not only for unity as a slogan; it was for practical compassion and mutual help.

Leaders should tell the truth and make room for dialogue

Love also urged citizens and leaders to unite around shared civic principles, address problems openly and speak honestly about difficult realities. Her vision of solidarity did not depend on pretending disagreements or challenges were absent; it required candid conversation about the country’s priorities.

How did the essay connect to her memoir?

Love linked the principles in the letter to her memoir, Qualified, saying that the ideas she wrote about in the book had shaped her life. She also emphasized character as part of the kind of country she hoped Americans could sustain. The memoir is related reading, not the letter itself.

How does the letter differ from later tributes?

The March 11 essay is the primary source for Love’s own wording and intentions. A later Senate tribute in the Congressional Record on May 14, 2025, reproduced a related passage that Love’s children read at her funeral. In that version, the record gives the line as: “Some have forgotten the math of America. Whenever you divide, you diminish. The goodness and compassion of the American people is a multiplier that simply cannot be measured.” This later wording differs from the Deseret News essay; the two versions should not be combined or treated as identical.

When did Mia Love die?

Love died on March 23, 2025, at age 49, according to the Associated Press and The Washington Post. She represented Utah’s 4th Congressional District from 2015 to 2019 and was the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress. Those events came after the essay’s publication: the article was Love’s own writing during her final days, rather than a statement assembled after her death.
