NKF reports that basketball fan Shane Cleveland matched with Robinson and donated a kidney later in 2025. The urgent appeal in the original headline describes a past search, not Robinson’s current status.
Did Nate Robinson get a kidney transplant?
Yes. The National Kidney Foundation reports that Cleveland saw Robinson’s appeal in early 2025, got tested, was found to be a match and donated later that year. NKF also shared Robinson’s thanks to Cleveland, calling him “a brother” who came through when Robinson was struggling.
This account updates an older appeal page from Kidneys for Communities, which still describes Robinson as needing a transplant. Because that page conflicts with NKF’s later report, it should not be taken as evidence of a current donor search.
Why was Robinson seeking a donor?
Robinson had spoken publicly about kidney disease and dialysis before the transplant report. NKF says he had kidney disease for more than 16 years, had been diagnosed with high blood pressure in his 20s and started dialysis in 2018. A Seattle Met account published February 11, 2025, says he learned during his 2006 rookie season that his kidneys were not functioning properly and that they were failing by 2021. It describes him as receiving dialysis three days a week, for four hours per session. The accounts differ on when dialysis began, so no single start date is established here.

Robinson’s appeal included a request for a living donor. Seattle Met reported that former NFL player Tank Johnson helped publicize the search with a video at the University of Washington’s spring game. The appeal identified A+ or O blood types as a need at the time. That historical detail is not a current request for donors.
How living kidney donation works
A person interested in donating starts by contacting a transplant center. The center evaluates the potential donor’s health and compatibility; knowing a recipient’s blood type or volunteering to help does not establish eligibility. The transplant team can explain testing, risks and the decision process for an individual donor.

Donation to a named recipient or someone on a waiting list
A directed donor intends to donate to a particular person. A non-directed donor gives to someone on a transplant waiting list without naming a recipient. Donation is voluntary: NKF says a prospective donor may stop at any point, including after approval and before surgery, and should not feel pressured.
What if donor and recipient are not compatible?
Incompatibility does not always mean a donor cannot help the intended recipient. In a paired exchange, a transplant center matches donor-recipient pairs with other pairs so each recipient can receive a compatible kidney from another donor. A transplant center can say whether this option is available and appropriate.

Costs to ask about
NKF says the recipient’s insurance covers medical expenses directly related to donation. It may not cover a donor’s travel, lodging, meals, childcare, pet care or lost wages. Assistance programs may help with some expenses; prospective donors can ask the transplant center’s social worker about eligibility and coverage before proceeding.

NKF’s living-donor guidance, last updated March 29, 2024, says a living-donor kidney may begin working sooner and may last longer on average than a deceased-donor kidney. Its estimates are general averages, not forecasts for Robinson or any individual recipient.
