Everybody Scream is Florence + the Machine’s sixth studio album, released on October 31, 2025. Its witchcraft, folk horror and birth-myth imagery gives shape to Florence Welch’s account of a period marked by physical crisis and a search for healing. The result is thematically focused, even as its grand orchestral pop stays close to the band’s familiar sound.
What is Everybody Scream about?
In an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Welch described the album as an urgent response to a specific moment in her life: “There was basically an urgency to this record. It came out of me in this furious burst.” She also said it was made “almost like a coping mechanism.” Welch recounted experiencing a dangerous ectopic pregnancy and emergency surgery; that personal account informs the album’s concerns with the body, grief, mortality and recovery, but it is not a clinical explanation of the record.
Instead, the album reaches for witchcraft, mysticism, folk horror and birth myths as ways to approach experiences that resist easy answers. In this context, the supernatural imagery is more than Halloween atmosphere: it supplies a symbolic language for vulnerability, transformation and the uneasy boundary between life and death. Le Monde’s November 12, 2025 feature reported Welch’s connection between the October 31 release date and the belief that the veil between the living and the dead is thinnest then.
From fame’s demands to a hopeful ending
Apple Music’s editorial notes describe the title track as addressing fame and the physical cost of performing. The album’s wider themes also include ambition, sexism, male entitlement, grief and mortality, as the Associated Press observes. Its closing song, “And Love,” gives that darker material a hopeful resolution in the interview’s framing—not by erasing the preceding hurt, but by turning toward the possibility of healing.

How does the album sound?
The album’s 12 songs run 49 minutes, according to Apple Music. Its musical frame is orchestral pop: strings, synths, guitars, piano and percussion support the scale and drama associated with Florence + the Machine. The collaborators named in the release announcement include Mark Bowen of IDLES, Aaron Dessner, Mitski, Danny L. Harle and Dave Bayley of Glass Animals. Production credits vary by track; Universal Music Italia lists Welch, Bowen, James Ford and Dessner among the producers.
That palette suits the material. The music’s sweeping scale can make private suffering feel almost mythic, while the lyrics’ bodily and personal focus keeps the album from being only theatrical spectacle. The tension is also the main limitation: the concept feels more newly sharpened than the sound itself. The Associated Press likewise praised the album’s coherence while noting that its sonic character is not far removed from the band’s established style.

Does Everybody Scream move the band forward?
It advances Florence + the Machine most clearly in focus, not in basic musical vocabulary. Welch’s personal account gives the album’s recurring images a more immediate center, and the feminist concerns sit productively beside the occult imagery: both challenge who gets to define women’s bodies, power and ambition. Le Monde emphasizes the contrast between feminist vitality and a morbid aesthetic; the two are not contradictions so much as complementary ways of facing vulnerability and control.
Listeners hoping for a sharp break from the group’s orchestral-pop identity may find the arrangements familiar. But familiarity does not make the album’s conceptual work empty. Its strength is the way a recognizably grand sound carries material that is unusually specific to Welch’s account of crisis and coping. The Associated Press awarded it three and a half stars out of five, a measured response that reflects the same balance: thematic unity, with less sonic reinvention.

Verdict
Everybody Scream is a coherent, emotionally grounded Florence + the Machine album whose occult imagery gives form to a personal story of bodily crisis, grief and healing. Its familiar orchestral sweep is both its strength and its constraint: the arrangements support the themes, but do not represent a dramatic reinvention. The album’s lasting interest lies in how deliberately it makes those established sounds serve Welch’s urgent, specific material.
