Some early critics have called 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple one of 2026’s standout films, but “best movie of the year so far” is an opinion—not a settled consensus. Tom’s Guide critic Malcolm McMillan gave the horror sequel 4.5 out of 5 and called it the best entry in the franchise. Later selections by ABC Arts and Euronews kept it in the conversation, using their own critics, dates and criteria.
What the first reactions say
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Alex Garland, with Ralph Fiennes returning as Dr. Ian Kelson. It is the second film in the 28 Years trilogy, following 28 Years Later.
The earliest headline framed the film as a possible best-of-2026 contender. That language captures enthusiasm, not a formal award or a shared ranking by all critics. In his 2026 review, Tom’s Guide’s Malcolm McMillan rated it 4.5/5 and wrote, “The Bone Temple is all gas, no brakes.” He also called it the best film in the franchise. Read the Tom’s Guide review.
Why critics responded to it
Kelson and Samson take center stage
The story gives particular weight to Kelson’s relationship with Samson, an infected Alpha, while young Spike faces the Jimmies. The conflict is not only between people and infected: ABC Arts’ Stephen A. Russell singled out the Jimmies as a terrifying human threat, while also noting the film’s unexpected tenderness and hopeful edge. See ABC Arts’ mid-year selections.

A more polished, faster-paced sequel
McMillan described The Bone Temple as more polished and propulsive than the preceding 28 Days Later. He nevertheless preferred that earlier film’s rougher Canon XL1 look. The contrast is a matter of taste: a cleaner, more forceful presentation may suit viewers looking for momentum, while fans of the original’s rough image texture may prefer its aesthetic.
How strong is its case for the year’s best?
Later lists show that the film continued to attract critical notice, but they do not establish a universal verdict. ABC Arts included it in a July 2026 selection of films critics had seen so far that year. Euronews ranked it fifth on a first-half list based on films’ European release windows. Those are different editorial selections, made at different times and under different criteria—not a single industry-wide poll.

So the fairest answer is: The Bone Temple was a serious early-year favorite for some critics, and one reviewer explicitly called it the franchise’s best. Whether it is the best movie of 2026 depends on the critic, the territory and how much of the year has been considered. Read Euronews’ first-half ranking.

The sequel builds on the trilogy’s continuing story and on Kelson’s place in it, so familiarity with 28 Years Later will help viewers follow the character relationships. The film also sits in a franchise whose earlier entries have a distinct visual style; McMillan’s comparison with 28 Days Later may be useful if that rougher look is part of what you enjoy about the series.
