The first trailer for Nicolas Cage’s The Surfer arrived in February 2025, and the film was shot in Yallingup, Western Australia. That confirms Yallingup as the production location—but available sources do not identify every beach shot in the trailer as Yallingup Beach specifically.
What the first trailer reveals
SURFER reported the first trailer on February 26, 2025; Stan announced its release on February 28. The preview introduces a psychological thriller about a man returning to the beach of his childhood with his son, hoping to surf. His attempt is challenged by local surfers, and the conflict escalates as he becomes increasingly humiliated and angry.
The synopsis reproduced by SURFER describes the locals’ mantra as “don’t live here, don’t surf here.” This is the film’s dramatic premise, not evidence about the behaviour or attitudes of Yallingup residents.
Was it filmed at Yallingup Beach?
Yallingup, in Western Australia, is confirmed as the film’s production location. Screenwest describes the film as shot in a single Yallingup location, and the Festival de Cannes production notes specify a remote beach and car park there. Director Lorcan Finnegan wrote in those notes: “All shot on a remote beach and car park in Yallingup, Western Australia, which was a weird and wonderful experience.”

That establishes Yallingup as the setting for the shoot, but does not verify that each beach view in the trailer is Yallingup Beach itself. The sources do not map individual shots to a named beach. The trailer offers a cinematic view of the film’s coastal setting; it should not be treated as a shot-by-shot location guide.
Who made The Surfer?
Nicolas Cage stars in the psychological thriller, directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Thomas Martin. The film follows the returning father and son as their planned surf outing turns into a confrontation with locals who claim the break for themselves. Screen Australia’s catalogue record lists the film’s credits, cast and festival entries.

Australian release and streaming information
Stan announced an Australian cinema release for May 15, 2025, followed by exclusive streaming on Stan from June 15, 2025. Those were the announced Australian dates; streaming availability can vary by territory and may change. Check Stan’s current title page for present availability.
What the production meant for Western Australia
In a 2023 production-wrap announcement, the Government of Western Australia said the production employed 150 Western Australians as cast, crew and extras and spent more than $4.85 million in the state. These are figures for the production, not estimates of tourism impact from the film.

Stan’s The Surfer title page lists the film and official trailer. The trailer’s Yallingup connection is grounded in the production location and Finnegan’s production notes, rather than a confirmed identification of every beach image.
