There is no established answer to whether Ann Woodward meant to shoot her husband, William Woodward Jr. She told police she mistook him for an intruder, and a Nassau County grand jury concluded that no crime had been committed. Those facts document her account and the legal outcome; they do not prove what she intended.
What happened the night William Woodward Jr. was shot?
On October 30, 1955, Ann and William Woodward Jr. attended a Long Island party hosted by Mrs. George Fisher Baker, where the Duchess of Windsor was guest of honor. TIME reported that they left at about 1 a.m. and returned to their Oyster Bay estate. There, Ann shot her husband with a shotgun. TIME’s November 7, 1955 account reported her explanation to police: she heard a noise, thought an intruder was in the house, and fired at a shadow in the hallway. This is what she said she believed, not independent proof of her state of mind.
What did the grand jury decide?
In December 1955, Woodward repeated the intruder explanation before a Nassau County grand jury. After hearing her testimony and evidence from 30 other people over nine and a half hours, the jury ended its investigation. Foreman Louis R. Blaich told TIME: “We found that no crime had been committed in the Woodward case.” The December 5, 1955 report records that official finding. Woodward was never charged, but the finding should not be read as a definitive historical determination of what she intended.
Why did the case remain a murder mystery?
The grand jury’s decision did not end public speculation. A 1999 Los Angeles Times retrospective described the shooting as officially ruled accidental while noting the gossip and suspicion that persisted. The article also attributed to journalist Susan Braudy the conclusion that the shooting was probably accidental. That is Braudy’s interpretation, not a legal finding or settled proof.

Truman Capote later drew on the Woodward story for “La Côte Basque 1965,” using the thinly veiled character Ann Hopkins to accuse her of murdering her husband. The portrayal helped keep suspicion alive, but a fictionalized literary accusation is not evidence that Woodward acted deliberately.
What does Feud: Capote vs. The Swans suggest—and what is established?
FX’s series dramatizes the social world around Capote and the women he portrayed. TIME’s 2024 retrospective identifies Demi Moore as Ann Woodward and notes that the series implies Woodward received an advance copy of Capote’s story. TIME reports no evidence that she did. It also finds no evidence that the story prompted her suicide, so that suggested causal chain should be understood as dramatization, not established fact. TIME’s account of the real events behind the series distinguishes those implications from what the record supports.

How to separate the record from the speculation
| Claim | What supports it | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Woodward said she mistook her husband for an intruder. | Her reported statement to police and testimony before the grand jury, covered by TIME in 1955. | Her account; not proof of what she believed. |
| The grand jury found no crime had been committed. | The foreman’s statement reported by TIME on December 5, 1955. | The official legal outcome; not a conclusive finding about intent. |
| The shooting was deliberate. | Later suspicion, gossip, and Capote’s fictionalized accusation. | These do not establish guilt or intent. |
| The shooting was probably accidental. | A conclusion attributed to journalist Susan Braudy by the Los Angeles Times. | Braudy’s interpretation, not an adjudicated fact. |
The most accurate answer to “Did Ann Woodward mean to shoot her husband?” is that the available record does not resolve her intent. It establishes that she killed him, gave an intruder account, and was not charged after the grand jury found no crime. Neither the official disposition nor later accusation proves what she meant to do.
