Captain Leonard Burns’ apparent alignment with the White-Clad is the betrayal suggested by Fire Force Season 3’s trailer coverage. It is separate from Company 8 being branded traitors after Captain Obi is captured: that is an accusation by the Tokyo Imperial Army, not proof that Company 8 has abandoned its cause.
What is the betrayal in Fire Force Season 3?
ORICON’s report on the Season 3 announcement describes the trailer as showing Captain Burns aligning with the White-Clad, making his apparent change of allegiance the most direct answer to “Who betrays the Fire Force?” ORICON’s announcement report identifies the turn, but does not provide a statement from Burns or creator Atsushi Ohkubo explaining why it happens.

The distinction matters because the season also gives Company 8 the label “traitors.” That wording describes the company’s political predicament after Obi’s capture, not a confirmed betrayal by its members.
Burns’ apparent turn and Company 8’s treason accusation are different events
| Question | Burns’ apparent betrayal | Company 8 branded traitors |
|---|---|---|
| Who is involved? | Captain Leonard Burns, as depicted in the trailer report. ORICON | The Tokyo Imperial Army labels Company 8 after Obi is captured. Prime Video season synopsis |
| What happens? | Burns appears to align with the White-Clad. | Company 8 is hunted as it tries to rescue Obi and stop the Evangelist. |
| What does “betrayal” mean? | An apparent shift in a character’s allegiance. | A state accusation; the synopsis does not establish that Company 8 actually betrayed its cause. |
| What is established about motive? | The trailer framing establishes the apparent turn, not Burns’ complete private reasoning. | The synopsis establishes the capture, label, and rescue predicament, not an independent judgment about the accusation. |
Why does Burns’ apparent allegiance shift feel so startling?
The official Season 3 framing sets up an expectation of cooperation. david production’s series page calls Season 3 “the final chapter” and describes the other Special Fire Forces showing willingness to cooperate to avert a major disaster. It says Shinra and his friends approach the world’s great secret after the battles over the pillars and an investigation of the Nether, before the final battle begins.
#1 Best Overall
Against that backdrop, Burns appearing to join the White-Clad disrupts the prospect of a unified response. That contrast helps explain why the turn is framed as shocking; it is an interpretation of the season synopsis alongside the trailer report, not a confirmed explanation of Burns’ motives. The available reporting does not settle his full reasoning.
How Obi’s capture leaves Company 8 branded as traitors
Prime Video’s season description says: “Obi is captured by the Tokyo Imperial Army, and Company 8 is branded as traitors.” It then describes the company being hunted while trying to rescue Obi and stop the Evangelist, with Burns among the obstacles. This presents a political crisis and a rescue mission; it does not establish that Company 8 has actually betrayed its values.
Rank #2
So the headline’s two possible readings should not be collapsed: Burns appears to change sides, while Company 8 is accused by the Empire in the aftermath of Obi’s capture.
Don’t confuse Burns with Sho Kusakabe’s earlier reversal
There is another betrayal storyline in Fire Force, but it runs in the opposite direction. In Crunchyroll’s story-arc guide, the Kusakabe History arc reveals that Sho decides to help his brother and betrays the White-Clad. That is Sho’s earlier change of allegiance, not Burns’ Season 3 turn.

Season 3 release and adaptation context
Crunchyroll announced that cour two premiered on January 9, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. Pacific Time on its service, excluding Japan, China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. That is a dated, region-specific release detail, not a guarantee of current availability elsewhere. The official Fire Force site lists Season 3 among platforms available in Japan and warns that distribution information can change, so viewers should check local listings.
david production credits Atsushi Ohkubo as the original story author. Readers interested in comparing the adaptation with its source can look for the original Fire Force manga; these sources do not establish a current retailer listing or which manga volumes correspond to particular Season 3 episodes.
