Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, died at their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025. Their son, Nick Reiner, is accused of killing them and has pleaded not guilty. The murder charges and allegations remain unresolved; as of October 8, 2026, the outcome of a motions hearing scheduled for the previous day had not been verified in the latest official case notice.

What happened to Rob Reiner and his wife?

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said the Reiners died at their home in the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood on December 14, 2025. Rob Reiner was 78 and Michele Singer Reiner was 70, according to the county’s case notice. The district attorney’s initial account said they were fatally stabbed; that description is a prosecution allegation, not an adjudicated finding. Nick Reiner was arrested later that evening, according to the county.

On December 16, 2025, District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman described the deaths as “shocking and tragic” and said his office would pursue justice and accountability. The statement was Hochman’s characterization of the case. Read the district attorney’s December 16 announcement.

Who is accused in the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner?

Los Angeles County prosecutors accuse Nick Reiner, the couple’s son, of killing his parents. He has pleaded not guilty. An accusation or grand jury indictment is not proof of guilt; the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

What charges and allegations does Nick Reiner face?

The district attorney’s office initially announced two murder counts and a special-circumstance allegation of multiple murders, as well as an allegation that Nick Reiner personally used a knife. A grand jury returned an indictment on July 20, 2026, which was unsealed on August 12. The indictment alleges multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait, along with the personal-use allegation concerning a knife. Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty, the county said. These are allegations in the criminal case, not findings that the conduct occurred.

The later indictment adds the lying-in-wait allegation to the case’s stated charges and allegations; it does not establish guilt. The county’s August 12 indictment announcement describes the filing and plea.

Will Nick Reiner face the death penalty?

No. On September 15, 2026, District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman announced prosecutors would not seek the death penalty. The county said that if Nick Reiner is convicted as charged, he faces life in state prison without the possibility of parole. The decision not to seek capital punishment does not resolve the murder charges or change the not-guilty plea. Read the September 15 penalty decision.

What is the latest court status?

The district attorney’s September 15 notice listed a motions hearing for October 7, 2026. That date has passed, but the latest official case-specific notice available here does not establish what happened at the hearing or identify a subsequent court date. It would therefore be inaccurate to report a ruling, a new schedule, or that the case has gone to trial. The status remains unresolved pending an authoritative post-hearing update.
