Fergie’s step back from the Black Eyed Peas was publicly explained first as a focus on solo music, then by bandmates as a wish to focus on motherhood. But accounts in 2017 conflicted over whether she had formally left: will.i.am spoke of her departure, while her representative said she had not left the group. The band also said she was not being replaced.
What was happening in 2017?
In June 2017, the Black Eyed Peas were pursuing their own project while Fergie was preparing her solo album, Double Dutchess. She also missed two scheduled appearances because of album commitments, according to CBS News, reporting for the Associated Press.

On June 1, the Los Angeles Times reported will.i.am’s explanation that she was focused on her solo album. He said, “Fergie is family and will always be a Pea,” and, “She is focused on her solo album, which we fully support.” The report noted that she had been working on Double Dutchess since 2014.
Did Fergie quit the group?
The public statements did not give one clear answer at the time. The Los Angeles Times framed will.i.am’s remarks as a departure, but the next day Fergie’s representative told CBS/AP that she had not left the group and was concentrating on her album. That difference matters: the reports establish her absence from some appearances and her solo focus, but do not settle exactly when—or whether—she formally left.

Was Fergie replaced?
No replacement was announced in those 2017 statements. The group told Entertainment Tonight, “Yeah, so, no one’s replacing Fergie,” and added, “Fergie has a dream and we support her dream.” The members described their Masters of the Sun project as underway while Fergie worked on Double Dutchess.

In a 2020 retrospective, Univision attributed to will.i.am, speaking in a Billboard interview, the explanation that Fergie wanted to focus on motherhood. The report also attributed a supportive statement to apl.de.ap. This is the explanation reported by her bandmates; the cited coverage does not provide a detailed first-person account from Fergie laying out one definitive reason.

What the accounts do—and do not—establish
- Reported in 2017: Fergie was focused on solo work, especially Double Dutchess, and missed some group appearances because of album commitments.
- Reported in 2020: bandmates said she wanted to focus on motherhood.
- Not established by these reports: that her label change caused her to leave, or a precise private decision-making process told in detail by Fergie herself. The Los Angeles Times mentioned her departure from Interscope and the Dutchess Music/BMG arrangement as context, not proof of a cause.
