For an easy plan, try a game or movie night at home; for fresh air, bring a picnic to the park and add Frisbee or a scavenger hunt; for a special outing, consider mini golf, fishing, or a cooking class if it matches his interests. Keep a weather-friendly backup, and check local details before you go.
Choose an activity that fits him and the group
Start with what the father figure actually enjoys, then factor in the group’s ages, abilities, budget, weather, and appetite for planning. A sports activity may suit one family and not another; there is no one-size-fits-all Father’s Day plan.
- For a relaxed, low-preparation day: make cards together, play a familiar game, or watch a favorite movie.
- For time outdoors: pack a picnic and add lawn games, kite flying, or birdwatching.
- For a planned outing: look into a cooking class, fishing, golf, or mini golf that fits his interests.
- For a larger family gathering: choose activities that can include different ages, such as a team scavenger hunt or relay games, and have an indoor alternative ready.
In a YouGov online poll conducted May 29, 2024, among 500 American fathers, 58% selected spending time with their children as a preferred Father’s Day activity. The poll also found 42% selected a meal at home and 30% selected eating out. These are U.S.-specific survey responses from 2024, not a rule about what every father wants. Read the YouGov results.
At-home activities for any weather
Family game night
Set out board games, playing cards, or video games and let Dad choose, or make it a friendly tournament. Keep the rules and teams flexible so younger children and older relatives can join. A homemade scorecard or small prize can add a festive touch without turning the evening into a production.

Outdoor ideas and simple outings

Scavenger hunt
Hide clues at home, in a yard, or around a suitable park and solve them as a team. Make clues simple for young children or more challenging for older participants. For a public location, keep the route safe and respect posted rules.
Kite flying or birdwatching
An open park or meadow can work for flying a kite when conditions allow. For a quieter alternative, bring binoculars and look for local birds. Both activities are easier to enjoy when the location and weather suit them.

Fishing, golf, or mini golf
Fishing and golf make sense when they are already interests of the person you are celebrating and the local setting works for the group. Mini golf can be a more casual family option. Check age suitability, accessibility, reservations, opening hours, and activity rules directly with the venue.
Community games for a big group
For a larger gathering, simple team activities such as kickball, sack races, relays, or basketball games can bring people together. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s event guide includes these kinds of group activities as well as indoor alternatives such as board games, coloring, and a movie. See HUD’s Father’s Day event guide.

Make a plan that can adapt
- Pick the mood: decide whether the day should be restful, active, creative, or centered on a shared interest.
- Match the activity to the group: account for children’s ages, mobility, energy levels, and whether extended family will join.
- Set the effort and budget: a homemade card or scavenger hunt needs little preparation; a class or venue outing may require booking and additional planning.
- Check practical details: for outings, verify local hours, reservations, age suitability, accessibility, weather, and rules with the venue or organizer.
- Choose a backup: if the plan depends on good weather, have a movie, game night, or card-making activity ready indoors.
Local availability, venue prices, schedules, and rules vary, so confirm them before making a specific outing the centerpiece of the day.
What recent U.S. surveys say about celebrations
These figures offer context, not instructions for an individual family. The National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics surveyed 7,914 U.S. consumers from April 30 to May 6, 2026; the survey’s reported margin of error is plus or minus 1.1 percentage points. In that survey, 77% said they planned to celebrate Father’s Day, 55% planned a special outing, and 31% planned to give an experience. These are planned intentions, not completed behavior. Read the NRF survey announcement.
Father’s Day dates and customs differ by country. The survey findings above describe U.S. respondents and should not be treated as universal patterns.
