The Fantastic Four: First Steps has passed Thor if “third” means the third-lowest-grossing Phase One film. It has not passed Iron Man 2, the third Phase One movie by release order. The distinction matters: as of October 8, 2026, the 2025 film’s listed worldwide gross is $521,858,728.
What is the film’s worldwide box-office total?
Box Office Mojo lists The Fantastic Four: First Steps at $521,858,728 worldwide: $274,286,610 domestic and $247,572,118 international. These are nominal cumulative grosses, not inflation-adjusted figures. Box Office Mojo’s film listing was accessed October 8, 2026; The Numbers’ archived MCU franchise table lists the same worldwide total. The Numbers’ MCU franchise table is archived September 12, 2026.

For Phase One comparisons, use worldwide totals on both sides. A domestic-only result cannot be directly compared with a worldwide total, and box-office gross is neither studio profit nor a count of individual viewers.
Which Phase One movie does it pass?
The answer depends on what “third” means. The six Phase One films, ordered from lowest to highest worldwide gross in The Numbers’ archived franchise history, are:
#1 Best Overall
- Set against the backdrop of a ?60s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel?s First Family faces a daunting challenge. Forced to balance being heroes with their family bond, they must defend Earth from a space god and his enigmatic herald.
| Worldwide gross rank | Film | Worldwide gross |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Incredible Hulk | $265,573,859 |
| 2 | Captain America: The First Avenger | $370,569,776 |
| 3 | Thor | $449,326,618 |
| 4 | Iron Man | $584,877,827 |
| 5 | Iron Man 2 | $621,156,389 |
| 6 | The Avengers | $1,515,100,211 |
At $521,858,728, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is $72,532,110 above Thor’s listed total. That makes it higher-grossing than the third-lowest Phase One film, but it remains below Iron Man and the two higher-grossing entries that follow it in this ranking. The figures are nominal worldwide totals from The Numbers’ archive dated September 12, 2026.
What if “third” means release order?
The third Phase One movie released was Iron Man 2, after Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. The Numbers lists Iron Man 2 at $621,156,389 worldwide, $99,297,661 above The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ listed total. So the newer film has not surpassed the third Phase One movie by release order. The Numbers’ archived MCU franchise table provides the comparison totals.
How does the opening weekend compare with the final total?
The Numbers lists a domestic opening weekend of $117,644,828. Its film page also gives a reported production budget of $200 million. That budget is not a complete measure of marketing and distribution costs, so it cannot establish whether the film made a profit.
Rank #2

Disney described the opening as $118 million domestic and $100 million international, or a $218 million worldwide debut. The Associated Press reported that the international estimate covered 52 territories. Those were contemporaneous opening-weekend figures, not the final cumulative gross. Disney also said that 46% of domestic box office came from premium large format, IMAX, 3D, or specialty formats, and that the movie played in 4,125 domestic locations; those are studio-reported figures. Disney’s opening-weekend account provides its estimates and format figures, while the Associated Press report covers the international territory count.

Why did the Fantastic Four arrive in the MCU at this point?
Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige explained that the characters had appeared in many major comic-book storylines adapted for Marvel films, including the Avengers, the Infinity Gauntlet, and Civil War, but were absent from those films because Marvel did not have the rights to them. His explanation appears in Disney’s article about the film’s opening.
