Early reaction to The Office Australia’s first trailer was notably critical, but it was not unanimous. News outlets highlighted sharp online comments alongside supportive responses and more measured reactions—evidence of a divided first impression, not a verdict from all fans.
What the trailer showed
Prime Video released the official trailer on 18 September 2024, ahead of the series’ announced 18 October premiere. The eight-part Australian series stars Felicity Ward as Hannah Howard, managing director of the fictional packaging company Flinley Craddick. It was presented as an Australian Amazon Original co-produced by BBC Studios Australia & New Zealand, Bunya Entertainment and Amazon MGM Studios. Prime Video’s announcement introduced the show as a new version of the workplace-comedy franchise.
The trailer retained familiar mockumentary ingredients: an inept boss, an ensemble of office workers and workplace friction. Its distinct setup included Hannah’s announcement that staff must return to the office full-time, while employees push back. The lead and setting also mark a change from the earlier versions: Ward plays the franchise’s first female boss, and the workplace is in Western Sydney. ABC News Australia’s trailer roundup noted recognizable character parallels with the US series, while the local workplace and characters give the Australian version its own frame.
Why early comments were negative
Some viewers’ first response was that the trailer looked too familiar, or that the show’s take on office comedy felt dated. PerthNow’s headline described the response as poor, and 7NEWS reported harsh YouTube comments. The criticism reflected a recognizable challenge for a new installment in a well-known franchise: a trailer can foreground familiar conventions before viewers have seen enough of the characters or stories to judge what the new version does with them.

That is a plausible reading of the trailer’s reception, not a measured explanation of why every critic objected. The available contemporaneous coverage records selected comments and editorial reactions, rather than a systematic survey of viewers.
The reaction was divided, not universal
Coverage also reported positive and more hopeful responses. 7NEWS noted supportive comments on Prime Video Australia’s Instagram, including praise for Ward’s casting and the trailer’s tone. ABC’s roundup was mixed: some contributors questioned the trailer’s familiarity, while another saw promise in scenes involving a wake and Melbourne Cup Day.

Those examples support a careful summary: many visible online commenters were critical, and early reaction was notably negative, but supportive reactions were also reported. They do not establish that fans as a whole rejected the series. Comment counts attached to individual posts are not a poll, and the reporting supplies no representative statistic for overall audience sentiment.
What the trailer could—and could not—show
A trailer offers a brief sample of a season, not the full development of its characters, running jokes or storylines. In an interview published when the series launched on 18 October 2024, Ward responded to the trailer criticism: “This is the thing – people are reviewing the trailer.” She also said she believed the season gradually established its own identity, which was not fully apparent from the pilot. Those are Ward’s views, not an independent measure of reception, but they explain why she distinguished the short preview from the finished season. ABC’s interview with Ward provides that launch-era perspective.

The fair conclusion from the first trailer is therefore limited: it prompted prominent criticism, while contemporaneous coverage also recorded support and mixed views. Judging whether the Australian series succeeded as a comedy requires looking beyond that initial preview.
