She said she did not understand contracts or know to check that her money was where it was supposed to be. “I didn’t know anything about contracts,” she told PEOPLE. She also said she trusted people who came into her life. Those comments are her retrospective account, not independently verified findings about particular transactions or individuals.
How did she describe the financial hardship?
In a transcript of an earlier interview on The Breakfast Club, Barrino said that after working on tour and taking care of her family, “There was no money in the bank.” She said people behind her had not acted in her interest. The transcript preserves her account; it does not independently establish what happened to her earnings.

She has also described losing everything more than once. In a 2019 interview reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, she said she had “lost everything twice” and said Tyler Perry checked on and helped her. In a separate 2023 interview covered by TheWrap, she said, “I lost everything twice, but I never gave up on God, because I knew he had me.” These remarks reflect her own descriptions of hardship and faith.

Barrino’s memoir, Life Is Not a Fairy Tale, became part of the public history around that period. PEOPLE reported that her father sued her in 2006 over his portrayal in the book.
