What happened to BIONICLE: Masks of Power?
Team Kanohi was developing BIONICLE: Masks of Power, a non-profit fan game set in the BIONICLE universe. PCGamesN reported that the LEGO Group asked the team to shut the project down in its entirety and remove it from public view. The team had been working on the game for eight years. It had planned to release a demo in August 2025 and was reportedly in late bug-fixing and polishing stages. Following LEGO’s request, the demo did not proceed.
What kind of game was it?
BIONICLE: Masks of Power was described as an open-world action RPG, made by fans rather than an official LEGO release. Its planned story followed the Toa as they sought masks of power and tried to free Mata Nui from Makuta. Its non-profit status and fan-made nature do not establish why LEGO asked the team to stop.

Why did LEGO ask for the shutdown?
The reason is not confirmed in the available report. Team Kanohi said it did not know exactly why LEGO chose that moment to act. No specific legal, commercial, or brand-protection explanation is established by the sources, so attributing one to LEGO would go beyond what is known.
Why BIONICLE fans cared about a fan game
BIONICLE was more than a toy line: LEGO’s Bits N’ Bricks history describes a franchise spanning toys, books, comics, graphic novels, video games, films, television, and trading cards. The original theme ended in 2010, followed by a later revival, while fan communities continued. LEGO’s support page lists older BIONICLE games among titles for which it no longer provides support. That information concerns legacy official games; it is not a guide to every game’s current availability or compatibility, and it does not explain the request to Team Kanohi.
