The drill is most directly associated with Super Mario Bros. Wonder: Nintendo names its power-up the Drill Mushroom, and the form Mario takes is Drill Mario. The comparison to Super Mario Galaxy 2 makes sense too, but that game has a separately named item, the Spin Drill. The distinction is in the games’ official terminology; Nintendo’s movie synopsis does not identify the film prop’s origin.
Which Mario game has the Drill Mushroom?
Super Mario Bros. Wonder features the Drill Mushroom power-up, which turns Mario into Drill Mario. Nintendo says, “You can drill through the ground (and ceiling!) to find new places to explore.” The item’s name and ability make Wonder the clearest source for the movie drill’s Drill Mario association. Nintendo’s game page lists the Drill Mushroom among its power-ups.
Why are people connecting it to Galaxy 2?
Super Mario Galaxy 2 also has a drill, but Nintendo’s manual calls it the Spin Drill. Mario uses it to bore through a planet’s ground, reach the other side and defeat enemies. That similar visual and function explain the comparison, but the official item name and game context are different from the Drill Mushroom in Wonder. Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy 2 manual documents the Spin Drill.
| Power-up | Game | What the official source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Drill Mushroom / Drill Mario | Super Mario Bros. Wonder | Nintendo says it lets players drill through ground and ceiling to explore new places. (Nintendo) |
| Spin Drill | Super Mario Galaxy 2 | Nintendo’s manual describes drilling through a planet’s ground, including to its other side, and defeating enemies. (Nintendo manual) |
What does the movie itself confirm?
The film-specific account that identifies Drill Mario appearing after he gets a Drill Mushroom comes from a community-maintained reference that cites promotional footage, not from Nintendo’s official movie synopsis. The reference’s account supports describing the scene as a Drill Mushroom moment, but Nintendo’s official movie page does not state that the prop was taken from Wonder, Galaxy 2, or any particular game. No filmmaker explanation for the choice is established by those sources.
