Viserys I, Aegon II, Rhaenyra, and Aegon III are central to the Dance-era struggle over the Iron Throne—but they do not represent a simple, uncontested succession. Viserys named Rhaenyra his heir; after his death, Aegon II was crowned by his faction, while Rhaenyra pressed her own claim. Aegon III succeeded after the conflict in the book-history chronology. This guide distinguishes rulers, claimants, and successors; it does not claim that each was shown physically sitting on the throne on screen.

What does “sit on the Iron Throne” mean here?

The phrase can mean three different things: formally reigning as monarch, claiming the throne or controlling King’s Landing during a dispute, or appearing in a scene physically seated on the throne. Those are not interchangeable. The succession sources establish the Dance-era political history, but they do not provide a complete catalog of throne-room scenes in every released episode.

House of the Dragon adapts Targaryen history from George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. HBO describes the series as taking place about 200 years before Game of Thrones. This article uses “ruler” and “claimant” in the political, story-history sense—not as proof of a specific on-screen throne appearance.

Who ruled before the succession crisis?

Viserys I Targaryen

Viserys I was king before the Dance of the Dragons. He named his daughter Rhaenyra heir, a decision that became the basis of her claim and helped set the succession conflict in motion. The series’ official page frames the dispute around Viserys’s choice of successor.

Why did Aegon II and Rhaenyra both claim the throne?

After Viserys died, the succession was contested rather than handed over through an undisputed line. Aegon II was crowned by his faction, known as the Greens. Rhaenyra’s claim rested on Viserys having named her heir; she was also a claimant who held power. The rival claims drove the Dance of the Dragons.

Figure Basis of claim or role How to describe the status
Aegon II Targaryen Crowned by his faction after Viserys’s death. A crowned king and rival claimant in the succession struggle.
Rhaenyra Targaryen Named heir by Viserys; advanced her own claim after his death. Viserys’s designated heir and a contested claimant who held power—not an uncontested successor.

Calling Rhaenyra simply “the next ruler” erases the political dispute; calling Aegon II the only relevant claimant does the same in reverse. The sources distinguish her designation and claim from his crowning and the later official history.

Who succeeded after the Dance?

Aegon III Targaryen

In the book-history chronology, Aegon III ascended in 131 AC, after the Dance. He was a child, and a regency governed at the beginning of his reign. This is source-history context; it should not be treated as confirmation that the series has already depicted each part of his accession.

Does this list prove who was shown sitting on the throne?

No. A character’s status as a monarch or claimant in the succession history does not establish that the character appears seated on the Iron Throne in a released episode. A literal scene-by-scene list would require checking the episodes themselves; the political chronology alone cannot supply it.

What is the story based on?

House of the Dragon draws on Martin’s Fire & Blood, the source for the broader Targaryen history behind the Dance. The series and the book-history account are related, but a detail from the historical chronology should not automatically be presented as an event already shown on screen.
