Why did Rick Eid step down?
Eid’s public explanation was that the renewal created a timely opportunity to shift his attention. In a statement quoted by TheWrap on April 19, 2024, he said: “After six years of running two, or more, of shows, and CBS now picking up FBI for three more years, this was the perfect time for me to step back and focus my efforts on running Law & Order and developing new projects.”
That is Eid’s stated rationale. The public reports cited here do not establish whether private negotiations, contracts, or creative disagreements also played a part, so those should not be treated as explanations for his exit.

Who replaced him as FBI showrunner?
CBS named Mike Weiss as showrunner for Season 7. TVLine reported the appointment on May 22, 2024: Mike Weiss took over after Eid.

As of October 2026, CBS lists Season 9 on the show’s official page, and its episode guide gives October 5, 2026, as the premiere date for “Rendition.” Paramount Global’s title page identifies FBI as a CBS drama: Paramount Global Content: FBI. Paramount+ also has a Season 9 guide, dated October 6, 2026: Paramount+ FBI guide. Availability can depend on location and subscription terms.

A ratings figure from the time of Eid’s exit
TheWrap’s April 2024 report attributed a season-to-date average of 9.04 million viewers to Nielsen and described FBI as the No. 4 broadcast series and No. 3 broadcast drama at that time.
