At a glance: which movie fits your family?
| Film | What the lead does | Story and feel | Age and content guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moana (2016 animated) | Sets out to prove herself as a wayfinder and help save her people. | Animated action-adventure with fantasy and musical elements. | Disney+ and Common Sense Media list 6+ guidance for the animated film; it is a recommendation, not a guarantee of fit. Disney+ family guide and Common Sense Media review. |
| Encanto (2021) | Mirabel is the Madrigal child without a magical gift, in a family where magic is central. | An animated family ensemble rather than a quest-focused adventure. | A comparable age recommendation and detailed content guidance are not established here; check a current guide before choosing. |
Frozen and the 1998 animated Mulan are also named on Common Sense Media’s list of movies with strong female characters. The available descriptions do not support a confident film-specific comparison of their leads, story details, or age fit, so treat them as titles to investigate rather than assessed recommendations. See the list.
Moana: a girl takes on a mission
Disney describes Moana as an adventurous teenager who sets out to prove herself a master wayfinder and save her people. Her strength is expressed through action: she accepts a difficult mission and uses her own skill and judgment to pursue it. The result is a useful pick for families seeking a protagonist with agency in a lively adventure, not merely a character described as “strong.”
Disney classifies the film as family, fantasy, musical, and action-adventure, and Disney+ presents it in its family guide as an adventurous sing-along. That combination makes it a natural choice for children who enjoy movement, songs, and a quest. Disney+ and Common Sense Media both give the animated film a 6+ recommendation; use that as a guide rather than a rule, and review current content guidance for your child.

Encanto: a family story with Mirabel at its center
Disney’s official description centers on the Madrigal family and identifies Mirabel as the child without a magical gift. That premise offers a different kind of strong lead from Moana: the story’s focus is a family ensemble and the place of a child who does not share a defining family trait. It may suit viewers more interested in relationships and belonging than a mission-driven adventure.
The available description establishes Mirabel’s position in the family, but not enough detail to make a full comparison of her choices or arc with Moana’s. Nor is a comparable age recommendation or detailed content guide established here. Check a current parent guide before deciding whether the film’s material fits your child.

How to choose a movie with a strong female lead
- For an adventure and a clear mission: choose Moana; its lead sets out to help her people.
- For a family-centered story: consider Encanto, whose premise turns on Mirabel’s place among the Madrigals.
- For music: Disney identifies Moana as a musical and Disney+ highlights its sing-along appeal.
- For age fit: treat ratings and parent-guide recommendations as starting points, then check current notes for themes or scenes that matter to your child. Equivalent guidance for every candidate is not established here.
Make the story a conversation
After watching, ask children what the protagonist decided, what she did when something was difficult, and how other people responded to her. Common Sense Media recommends that adults discuss portrayals of women in media with children of all genders. Questions about who gets to lead, solve problems, or make choices can help turn a movie night into a thoughtful conversation without expecting every film to offer the same kind of role model.
