For a friendship-and-courage story, start with The Good Dinosaur; for a survival adventure, consider Dinosaur (2000); and for a lighter comedy-adventure, try Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. All three films are rated PG by their respective official listings. Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous is another option for serialized suspense, but it is a TV-PG series—not a movie.
Three dinosaur movies, three different kinds of adventure
A rating can help you compare titles, but it does not tell you how an individual child will respond to peril or suspense. These official ratings are not universal age recommendations, so use each synopsis and your child’s temperament to decide.

The Good Dinosaur (2015): friendship and courage
Disney lists this animated family film as PG, with a release date of November 28, 2015. Apatosaurus Arlo befriends a human and travels through a harsh, mysterious landscape. Disney describes the story as “a hilariously heartwarming adventure about the power of confronting and overcoming your fears and discovering who you are meant to be.” That makes it the clearest pick here for a story about fear, friendship, and courage. Its journey takes place in a harsh setting, so consider previewing it if your child is sensitive to threatening situations. Disney’s film page has the official synopsis and rating.
Dinosaur (2000): a survival-focused journey
Disney lists this film as PG, released May 19, 2000. After a meteor shower destroys their home, Aladar and his family travel with a herd toward nesting grounds. The official synopsis names food and water shortages, carnotaur attacks, and conflict with the herd’s leader. Those specific hardships make this the most survival-oriented choice on the list—and useful details to weigh if your child is unsettled by danger or scarcity. See Disney’s official synopsis.

- A three-ton Iguanodon named Aladar, who is raised from the egg by a clan of lemurs and eventually reunited with his own kind, finds himself and the other dinosaurs in trouble when flaming meteors devastate the landscape and the water supply diminishes. In a race against time, the dinosaurs attempt to reach the safety of their nesting grounds. When Aladar comes to the aid of a group of misfits unab
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009): comedy and adventure
Disney+ lists this animated action-adventure comedy as PG, with a runtime of 1 hour 37 minutes. Familiar prehistoric characters enter a mysterious underground world inhabited by dinosaurs, giving this installment a comedic adventure framing rather than the survival emphasis of Dinosaur. Disney+ also warns that it contains flashing-light sequences or patterns that may affect photosensitive viewers. Check the Disney+ listing for its synopsis and local catalog status; availability can vary by region and change over time.
A series option for families who want suspense
Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous (2020–2022): serialized dinosaur peril
This is a series, not a movie. Netflix lists five seasons and a TV-PG rating. Six teen campers try to survive after dinosaurs break out on Isla Nublar; DreamWorks’ description specifically mentions the Indominus Rex escaping. Its continuing suspense may suit families looking for a longer story, but the rating alone cannot establish that it will suit a younger or more sensitive child. Netflix’s catalog and recommendation availability may vary by region. Consult the Netflix listing and DreamWorks’ series description.

How to choose for your child
- Consider tone: Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is framed as comedy-adventure; The Good Dinosaur emphasizes friendship and confronting fear; Dinosaur makes survival hardships and attacks part of its premise.
- Look for the specific story cues: peril, hardship, dinosaur attacks, or suspense may matter more to your child than the broad rating.
- Use the official rating as one clue, not an age guarantee: the three films are listed as PG, while Camp Cretaceous is listed as TV-PG.
- Preview when uncertain: if a child is particularly sensitive to threat or suspense, a caregiver can check the synopsis or watch ahead before choosing.
Where to check availability
Disney and Netflix list these titles, but a listing is not a promise that a film or series is available in every country or remains in a local catalog. Check the service’s listing in your region before planning a movie night. Netflix’s dinosaur viewing roundup also notes that availability can vary by region.
