It is the one Stephen King novel in which Pennywise is a central character. Beyond it, King’s official website directly names Pennywise on the page for the short story “Fair Extension”—but that is a setting note, not proof that the clown appears in the story’s plot. Other Derry references and shared-universe clues should not be counted as Pennywise appearances without evidence from the text.

King’s novel It is the primary source for Pennywise. The publisher identifies it as King’s novel and the basis for screen adaptations on its official book page. For exact scene counts, chronology, or claims about particular passages, consult the novel itself: the online character index corroborates the character’s disguises but is not a scene-by-scene census.
Why Derry references do not count as Pennywise appearances
Derry is a recurring location in King’s fiction, but a story mentioning or taking place in Derry does not, by itself, show that Pennywise appears or is named there. King’s Dark Tower connections page lists Derry links across works including Dreamcatcher, Insomnia, “The Road Virus Heads North,” and “Autopsy Room Four.” Those connections are useful leads for continuity, not confirmation of a Pennywise appearance in each work.
Scholar Vincent Neyt’s 2025 University of Antwerp article, “Pre-IT References to Derry in King Stories”, likewise examines Derry references in works including The Running Man, The Body, “Uncle Otto’s Truck,” Pet Sematary, “Mrs. Todd’s Shortcut,” and “The Revelations of ‘Becka Paulson.” Its subject is Derry and the publication history of those references—not a tally of Pennywise appearances. A location link, an allusion to It, and a direct appearance are different kinds of evidence.

Pennywise, Dandelo, and the Deadlights
King’s official connections page addresses a separate continuity question: some readers have thought Pennywise and Dandelo are the same being, but the page says King has stated they are not. It adds that they are “most likely of the same species.” The page also says the Deadlights concept is shared by Pennywise and the Crimson King. These qualified connections do not make Dandelo or the Crimson King additional Pennywise appearances.
How complete is the list?
The confirmed evidence supports one direct character source, It, and one explicit mention on the official page for “Fair Extension.” It does not establish a complete, bibliography-wide count of every Pennywise name reference or appearance in King’s fiction. King’s works list is a bibliography, not a character index; additional entries should be counted only when a passage in the work itself confirms what kind of connection it contains.
