Peter Jackson has one reported appearance in each of the six films in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Most are brief live-action roles; in The Battle of the Five Armies, he appears as a likeness in a portrait. The timestamps below are reported for the extended editions and are viewing pointers, not independently frame-checked timings.
Peter Jackson’s cameos in release order
| Film | What to look for | Reported extended-edition timestamp |
|---|---|---|
| The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) | As the hobbits arrive in Bree, Jackson appears among the residents eating a carrot. Some secondary reporting calls the character Albert Dreary; “Bree resident” is the safer on-screen description. | 58:20 |
| The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) | Look for Jackson as a defender at Helm’s Deep during the battle. | 2:56:37 |
| The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) | Jackson appears as a Corsair aboard a ship attacking Gondor. The report identifies two appearances in the sequence and says Legolas kills him in the later one. | 54:20 and 2:07:35 |
| The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) | During Smaug’s attack on Erebor, Jackson is a dwarf fleeing the destruction. | 8:01 |
| The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) | The carrot-eating Bree resident returns as the dwarves arrive in town. | 1:11 |
| The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) | Jackson’s likeness appears in a portrait of Bilbo’s father, Bungo Baggins. A nearby portrait depicts Fran Walsh. This is an image cameo, not a live-action role. | 2:29:10 |
The six-entry list and times are reported by Xataka. Slashfilm also describes several of the appearances, including the fleeing dwarf and Bungo Baggins portrait. The times are specifically presented as extended-edition timestamps; they should not be assumed to match theatrical cuts or every release’s playback counter.
Which cameos are easiest to recognize?
The recurring Bree resident
The most distinctive repeated appearance is the carrot-eating resident in The Fellowship of the Ring and The Desolation of Smaug. The second film revisits Bree, giving Jackson’s brief background role a visual echo across the two trilogies.
The battle roles
In The Two Towers, Jackson is part of the defense at Helm’s Deep. In The Return of the King, he is on the opposing side as a Corsair. Both are brief crowd or action appearances, so the reported timestamps can help when scanning an extended edition.

The image cameo
The portrait in The Battle of the Five Armies is easy to mistake for another live-action appearance if the distinction is not made clear. Jackson is represented by his likeness as Bungo Baggins; he does not appear as a moving character in that moment.
What the timestamps do—and do not—tell you
The listed positions come from secondary reporting and refer to extended editions. They are useful places to start, but they are not verified frame-by-frame against a specific disc or streaming master. Playback counters can also vary by release and by whether a player includes studio logos or other material before the film. No corresponding theatrical-cut timestamps are established here.

The films also include cameos by other actors, crew members, relatives and Tolkien family members. Those appearances are separate from Jackson’s six reported entries. Counting them together would answer a different question than where the director himself appears.
