This ranking weighs each version by character clarity, opportunity to develop, lasting recognition, and documented career moments—not by personal struggles or an imagined fan consensus.
How this ranking compares the personas
A long-running character has more time to build a legacy than a concept that barely reached television. The ranking therefore considers what each version was meant to be, how much it was realized, and the career moments attached to it. Fans who value ring craft, nostalgia, or originality above the other factors may rank The Natural and the AEW-era veteran differently.
5. Black Reign
Black Reign ranks last as a character with a limited legacy and an uncertain fit, rather than because the available record proves it was objectively Rhodes’s worst work. In a 2013 interview with WrestlingInc, Rhodes spoke candidly about a difficult period associated with this TNA persona. That context is relevant to the character’s place in his career, but personal hardship is not a measure of artistic value—and the available sources do not provide enough match-by-match evidence to make that case.
4. Seven
Seven had a strong horror premise but never received a sustained run. In a WWE interview, Rhodes said he envisioned unsettling opponents with psychological mind games, while executives saw the character differently and it did not get the opportunity he intended. Seven belongs near the bottom because it remained largely unrealized, not because the concept had no potential.

3. Dustin Rhodes, “The Natural”
The Natural is the foundation of Rhodes’s career: an early identity built as he developed as a wrestler. He recalled that Mike Graham and Steve Keirn trained him and that the nickname came from how quickly he took to the craft. “They named me ‘The Natural,’ because I caught it so quick,” Rhodes told WWE. WWE’s retrospective on Goldust’s beginnings describes him shedding the Natural name and cowboy boots when he became Goldust in 1995.
This version matters as the starting point for the performer’s evolution, even if it is less immediately recognizable as a pop-culture character than Goldust.
2. Later Dustin Rhodes, including the AEW era
Rhodes’s later presentation benefits from accumulated experience rather than a newly defined gimmick. A WWE retrospective from 2013 described Goldust’s return as a seasoned performer able to work hold-for-hold with younger wrestlers. AEW’s official roster page lists Dustin Rhodes and identifies The Final Reckoning as his signature move.
This phase ranks above the early Natural era for the craft and experience visible in a veteran performer. It is not a separate invented character name: it is Dustin Rhodes continuing his career with a body of experience behind him.

1. Goldust
Goldust is the strongest and most fully realized version of Rhodes. WWE dates the persona’s debut to 1995 and describes its striking black-and-gold presentation, platinum wig, latex look, and boundary-pushing style. The visual identity made the character immediately distinct, while reinvention and longevity gave it room to endure.
Career milestones
- WWE says Goldust won the Intercontinental Championship at the 1996 Royal Rumble.
- A WWE retrospective connects Goldust to the WrestleMania XII Back Lot Brawl with Roddy Piper.
- WWE’s 2012 retrospective, “Upholding the tradition of breaking the mold,” credits Goldust with seven WWE Hardcore Championship reigns. Sporting News reported nine in a 2019 career summary; the published totals conflict, so neither figure should be treated as an uncontested count.
Those milestones sit alongside a memorable family and tag-team history, reinforcing Goldust as more than a single visual hook. No verified statistic establishes a consensus ranking among fans, so this top placement is an editorial judgment about clarity, longevity, and documented moments.
