M.G. Ramachandran—MGR—built a screen identity around virtue, social concern and public respect. In an excerpt from R. Kannan’s biography MGR: A Life, that identity emerges through the roles and dialogue MGR accepted, the stories and songs shaped around him, and the way he guarded his standing off screen. The excerpt’s central point is that the film hero and public figure reinforced one another, not that screen image alone explains his political success.
What kind of hero did MGR play?
The recurring MGR hero described in the excerpt is intelligent and physically capable, but his strength is paired with moral restraint. He acts honourably, protects the meek and shows devotion to his mother. Stories, dialogue and songs repeatedly reinforce those traits, making virtue part of the character audiences encountered across films.
That consistency was not presented as accidental. The excerpt says MGR was selective about roles and dialogue, avoiding parts that could compromise the image. It gives his refusal of a Devdas-like role as an example. As quoted in the excerpt, MGR asked: “After singing songs that have a message for society, how can I, even if it is necessary for the plot, act as a drunk?” The line captures the tension between a role’s demands and the identity he sought to preserve.
How was that image built across films?
MGR’s persona was a collaborative construction as well as an acting choice. The excerpt describes producers, scriptwriters and lyricists shaping films to fit and extend the screen identity. MGR, in turn, understood the importance of stories, roles, songs and punchlines in sustaining it. A virtuous hero could recur not only through plot but through the words and music associated with him.

The effect, in Kannan’s account, was continuity: each new film could reaffirm qualities already attached to MGR’s screen presence. This is the excerpt’s interpretation of how the image was maintained; it does not offer measured evidence of how individual viewers responded.
Why did MGR manage his public conduct too?
The excerpt argues that protecting the image did not stop when filming ended. It recounts an anecdote from editor Arurdhas: MGR preferred to be prompted quietly rather than shouted at across a set. As the excerpt quotes him telling Arurdhas, “When you prompt me, shouting from across the sets, I don’t feel anger but embarrassment. I will never allow an inch of my respect to be lost in the eyes of others.”

The episode illustrates the excerpt’s broader claim that public respect was something MGR consciously guarded. It is an anecdote attributed to Arurdhas in the excerpt, rather than independent documentation of a general rule about MGR’s conduct.
How did MGR’s choices differ from Sivaji Ganesan’s?
Kannan’s excerpt contrasts MGR’s selectivity with Sivaji Ganesan’s greater willingness to take a wider range of roles, including morally negative characters. The contrast is about the relationship each actor’s choices had to public persona: MGR’s screen identity depended on a recognisable virtuous hero, while Sivaji was presented as more open to transformation between roles.

The excerpt also connects MGR’s choices with political reception. It quotes Sivaji, in a 1997 interview, as saying, “MGR is the chief among those who understood themselves.” The account attributes to Sivaji the retrospective view that MGR chose roles that earned public respect. This is a recollection about MGR’s self-understanding and image, not proof that role selection by itself caused political success or a comprehensive comparison of the two actors’ careers.

The argument is that film persona and public figure supported each other: a screen hero repeatedly associated with social concern and honour could help shape how MGR was perceived beyond the cinema, while his management of public respect protected the image. That is an interpretation of the relationship, not a quantified account of audience behaviour or a demonstration that films alone produced political support.

Scroll.in published the excerpt, “Behind the MGR seduction: An image as carefully scripted as his films,” in 2017, with permission from R. Kannan’s MGR: A Life. Penguin Random House India describes the biography as following MGR from poverty through film stardom and political life; its publisher page also identifies him as a three-time chief minister and Bharat Ratna recipient. Those are biographical descriptors, not measurements of the screen image’s political effect.
