Naomi Swartzentruber says she left her Amish family at 17, before baptism, because she wanted a life beyond the one she knew. About two years later, while worried about money in Minnesota, she began dancing at a strip club. In a December 2024 PEOPLE interview republished by Yahoo Lifestyle, she described the work as an unexpected source of empowerment—and spoke about the guilt and family strain that accompanied her choices.

Why Swartzentruber decided to leave

In the interview, Swartzentruber said she grew up in an Amish family in Michigan with seven brothers and four sisters. She recalled sneaking out with cousins to meet non-Amish boys. After she was caught at 17, she said, she decided to leave: “I decided then that it was best for me to leave.”

She told PEOPLE that she wanted “freedom and technology” and felt there was more to her life than being Amish. The feature reports that she left in July 1997, before baptism. She feared that if she were baptized and later left, she would be shunned; the article says she was not baptized and was not shunned. That is the account of her particular circumstances, not a general description of Amish practice.

Starting over, then finding work on stage

Swartzentruber said a man and his wife helped her leave during the night and travel to their home. According to the feature, after she turned 18, the wife helped her apply for work, and Burger King hired her.

About two years after leaving, while living in Minnesota and concerned about money, Swartzentruber went with a friend to a strip club. The interview says she initially turned down a job offer, but danced that night and was surprised to receive $55 in tips. That figure is her recollection of one early night, not a current or typical earnings estimate.

How she described dancing and its costs

Swartzentruber said she found a sense of confidence on stage that she had not expected: “When I stepped on that stage, something would come alive inside of me, like this empowerment and this fire that I didn’t know that I had, and I loved it.” The feature reports that she danced for 20 years. She said she paused during the COVID-19 pandemic and left the industry after becoming pregnant; the December 2024 profile says she welcomed a child in 2021.

Her account also includes religious guilt about performing. “I thought that I was going to go to hell because I was sinning, because I was showing my body and performing on stage,” she said. The profile presents that fear alongside her description of dancing as liberating, rather than treating either feeling as the whole story.

Family relationships after she left

The feature describes an initially difficult adjustment with her family. Swartzentruber recalled a visit when relatives asked her to come inside wearing Amish clothes or appeared to expect her to stay. She said relationships with some siblings improved over time, while her parents did not accept her partner, Nick. These are family details reported in the December 2024 interview, not independently corroborated accounts.

At the time the profile was published, Swartzentruber and her partner were living in Arizona with their child. That is a time-specific detail from the 2024 article, not confirmation of their current residence or household.

Her memoir and telling the story publicly

Swartzentruber’s memoir, The Amazing Adventures of an Amish Stripper, was published in 2023, according to the feature. She said publishing it brought relief and made it easier to speak openly about her past: “Ever since I published my book, I feel so relieved because I know my story is out there, and I feel like it’s really helped me let go and to be open and just to be okay with it.” The profile also reported that she had more than 400,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok at its December 2024 publication; that audience figure should be read as a dated snapshot.

The PEOPLE feature by Zoey Lyttle, republished by Yahoo Lifestyle and updated December 3, 2024, is an interview-led personal profile. Its chronology, family details and figures reflect Swartzentruber’s account as presented there.
