Viral TikTok self-care advice ranges from mildly useful to unsupported or genuinely risky. For skin care, facial icing may briefly reduce puffiness, slugging may help some dry skin, and pimple patches can protect a surface-level blemish from picking—but none is a universal fix. At-home microneedling, nasal tanning sprays and other invasive or unregulated practices carry more serious concerns. The guidance below focuses on skin-care trends and a few wider wellness examples; it is not an exhaustive verdict on every TikTok trend.
How to judge a viral self-care hack
Popularity is not evidence that a practice works or is safe. Cleveland Clinic advises checking online health advice with licensed professionals, while the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) cautions that a trend suitable for one person may irritate or harm another. Videos may also use filters and omit adverse effects.
For any trend, ask four questions: What benefit is claimed? What evidence or expert guidance supports it? What could go wrong, and for whom? Is there a safer, better-established option? Most of the guidance available on viral self-care concerns skin care, so the examples here should not be taken as a review of every health or wellness trend.
Skin-care hacks: what they may do and where they fall short
Facial icing
Icing may temporarily reduce the appearance of puffiness, but it is not a lasting skin treatment. Cleveland Clinic aesthetician Lori Scarso describes it as “a temporary way to get a little wake-up for your skin after a long night or a hard day.”

Slugging
Slugging means applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly to create an occlusive barrier that slows water loss. Cleveland Clinic says it may help dry skin, but it is not right for everyone. The benefit is not a cure for a skin condition, and the advice does not establish that slugging is effective for all skin types.
A 2022 study of the top 50 TikTok videos about slugging found that 18 videos (36.7%) discussed risks or benefits in an educational way. Healthcare-provider creators made more educational videos than influencers or other sources in that sample. Those findings describe video content, not whether slugging works clinically.
Double cleansing and product-heavy routines
Double cleansing may be excessive for many people. Cleveland Clinic dermatologist Jane Wu warns: “Overwashing can lead to dryness, irritation and the breakdown of the skin barrier, which subsequently causes issues like breakouts and eczema.” Glass-skin routines can include useful habits such as moisturizing and broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, but layering too many products may clog pores, irritate skin or cause breakouts, according to the AAD.

- Collagen Wrapping Mask: Provides overnight elasticity care with a collagen wrapping film that locks in skin’s firmness and prevents elasticity loss.
Soap brows, face tape and dermaplaning
Soap brows can cause allergic or irritant reactions. Face tape has, at best, a temporary effect and may cause irritation, allergic reactions or blisters. At-home dermaplaning may remove surface dead skin, but Cleveland Clinic advises avoiding it during breakouts or other skin conditions.
Skin-care fridges and red-light devices
A dedicated skin-care fridge is generally unnecessary: products are formulated for normal home storage. For at-home red-light devices, the AAD says some have FDA clearance for particular uses, but more research is needed to establish exact effectiveness. In the United States, FDA clearance does not prove that a device works for every condition or person. AAD dermatologist Amit Om recommends consulting a board-certified dermatologist before using one.
Acne advice: limited uses are not cures
Pimple patches
According to AAD dermatologist Fatima Fahs, pimple patches may draw fluid from pimples and help prevent picking. They do not work on deep acne, so a patch should not be treated as a complete acne treatment.

Chamomile tea and dandruff shampoo
Fahs says there is not enough evidence to support chamomile tea as an acne treatment. Applying tea bags directly to skin may cause irritation. Dandruff shampoo may help some forehead bumps caused by yeast, but it is not formulated for facial skin; overuse can cause dryness, irritation and more breakouts.
Saunas
Saunas may help some skin conditions and worsen others, and they can increase infection risk. Whether one is appropriate depends on the person and the condition; a general viral tip cannot resolve that distinction.

At-home microneedling, fillers and hair-removal lasers
The AAD warns against attempting microneedling, fillers or hair-removal laser procedures at home. Dermatologist Sara Moghaddam says: “For example, at-home microneedling, also known as dermarolling, is dangerous due to risk of infections and improper techniques.” These procedures warrant professional guidance rather than copying a video.

Nasal tanning sprays and unprotected sun exposure
The AAD says ingredients in nasal tanning sprays are not FDA-approved or regulated for this purpose. Dermatologist Lindsey Zubritsky says: “Melanotan isn’t approved or regulated by the FDA, and it’s illegal to sell it in many countries, including the United States.” The AAD also warns about inhaling the spray and seeking unprotected sun exposure; Cleveland Clinic describes serious risks, including muscle injury and melanoma.
Pepper lip plumping and supplements
Applying pepper to lips for temporary fullness can cause allergic contact dermatitis, other rashes and persistent dark spots, according to the AAD. The organization also advises against taking skin, hair and nail supplements without a physician’s advice: some ingredients have been linked to birth defects, increased cancer risk, acne or hair loss.
Russian manicures
Removing the cuticle can compromise its protective barrier and raise the risk of bacterial or fungal infection, the AAD warns. A polished appearance is not worth overlooking that potential harm.

Sunscreen claims: use established protection, not viral misinformation
The AAD says current scientific evidence does not show that any sunscreen ingredients currently available in the United States are harmful to human health. Its guidance is to seek shade, wear sun-protective clothing and use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
What a study of young creators’ routines found
A 2025 study indexed on PubMed analyzed 100 TikTok skin-care routine videos featuring creators aged 18 or younger. In that sample, the videos averaged 1.1 million views, six products and $168 per routine; 26.2% included sunscreen. Among the 25 most-viewed videos, routines averaged 11 potentially irritating active ingredients. The authors concluded that the sampled routines were costly, infrequently included sunscreen and often exposed viewers to ingredients associated with irritation, allergic contact dermatitis and sun sensitivity.
These figures describe the videos in that study, not all TikTok posts, all young creators or the routines of young people generally. They do show why viewers should be cautious about copying multi-step routines without considering age, skin type, product interactions and sun protection.
Self-care trends beyond skin care
Cleveland Clinic’s broader discussion of TikTok health trends warns that the platform is not a substitute for medical advice. It highlights potentially harmful medication challenges and notes that food-comparison videos can encourage unhealthy comparisons or disordered eating. Risks and evidence differ by trend, so one example cannot stand in for every kind of viral self-care advice.
When to ask a clinician
Consider speaking with a board-certified dermatologist before trying a new treatment if you have a persistent skin problem, an existing skin condition, a history of reactions or uncertainty about how products may interact. Fahs advises: “With so many tips online, it’s best to be cautious and make an appointment to see a board-certified dermatologist before trying new treatments.” Invasive procedures and unregulated products call for particular caution.
