Exhuma is a 2024 South Korean occult horror film that begins with an ancestor’s grave and grows into a story about Korea’s troubled past. Its shamanic rituals, geomancy and richly staged buildup make it distinctive; its major narrative turn may either deepen the mystery or leave some viewers feeling that the film explains too much.
What is Exhuma about?
Written and directed by Jang Jae-hyun, Exhuma (Korean title: Pamyo) opened in South Korea on February 22, 2024, and runs 133 minutes, according to the Korean Film Council catalog.
A wealthy Korean-American family hires two shamans, Hwa-rim and Bong-gil, to investigate a series of troubles. Hwa-rim suspects an ancestor is involved, so a geomancer and an undertaker join the shamans to exhume the family grave in a remote Korean village. What they uncover shifts the film beyond a curse-centered mystery. That turn is best encountered without advance detail.
Is Exhuma worth watching?
Yes, if you enjoy atmospheric horror built around ritual and place, and are willing to follow a story that changes shape. The film’s early strength is its deliberate buildup: the grave, the team’s specialized roles and the threat around the exhumation give the supernatural mystery a tactile, grounded feel. Yonhap’s February 23, 2024 review also praised this immersive buildup, the traditions informing it and the ensemble’s acting.

The performances help make the team compelling, while the film’s cultural texture gives its horror a vocabulary beyond familiar haunted-house conventions. Shamanism, geomancy and ancestral burial are central to the story’s imagery and action. They are elements of this film’s particular approach, not a complete account of Korean religious or burial practices.
Does Exhuma get confusing in the second half?
It makes a substantial shift. The grave mystery opens into a broader supernatural and historical story, changing what the threat means and where the film’s attention falls. Whether that expansion feels like a payoff or a detour is the key point of disagreement about the movie.

- Why the shift works for some viewers: BFI’s Sight and Sound review values the film’s interwoven folkloric and historical layers, seeing them as part of a locally grounded, plural approach to occult horror.
- Why it may not work for others: Yonhap’s review argues that tension drops after the central revelation and that the film explains too much. BFI likewise notes that viewers must work to reconcile the story’s two movements.
So, the second half is not simply a matter of the plot being hard to follow. The question is whether the expanded mythology and historical material deepen the initial mystery enough to justify its change in momentum. Viewers who prefer a tightly contained curse story may find the turn less satisfying; those drawn to layered supernatural storytelling may welcome the added scope.
What historical meaning did Jang intend?
Director Jang has connected the act of exhumation to uncovering historical wounds inflicted by Japanese imperialism. In a February 26, 2024 interview with The Korea Times, he described the ritual as a metaphor for bringing up and removing the past, and imagined Korea’s land as a person who had suffered many wounds. That is Jang’s stated intention and a way to read the film—not a claim that its supernatural events document history or that one horror film represents the full complexity of that history.

The metaphor gives the grave story a wider resonance, but its effectiveness depends on how well the viewer accepts the film’s turn from intimate family mystery to historical symbolism. That shift is also where the movie’s ambition and its structural risk meet.

- Go in with the right expectation if you want a compact, straightforward curse narrative: the film broadens considerably after its central revelation.
- Consider another pick if you need every mystery resolved economically or prefer tension to remain on a single track.
Exhuma drew more than 9.5 million viewers, according to Yonhap’s March 21, 2024 report, which described the film as approaching the 10-million milestone. That is a dated report, not a final audience total. In that interview, Jang said he wanted to make “a fun movie to watch amidst the gloomy atmosphere of the pandemic.” The result is a crowd-pleasing horror film with an unusually ambitious second movement—and a real divide over whether that ambition strengthens its story.
