Nen is the fictional ability to control aura, the life energy emitted by the body. To understand how it works, separate three layers: the four foundational principles for controlling aura, the six categories that describe the broad nature of abilities, and applications such as In and Gyo. Nippon TV’s official Japanese glossary defines those foundations, categories, and two applications; it does not provide a complete catalogue of every advanced Nen form.
What Nen is—and what the word “forms” can mean
Nippon TV’s official Hunter × Hunter glossary describes aura as energy emitted by humans and connected to human life energy. Nen is the ability to manipulate that aura and increase or decrease it. It is a fictional power system tied to the body and mind, not a real-world practice.
“Nen forms” can refer to different layers of that system. The four principles are basic methods of aura control; the six categories classify the broad nature of abilities; and applications such as In and Gyo use aura in particular ways. They are related, but they are not interchangeable lists.
The four foundational principles
The glossary calls these the Four Major Principles, the basic elements for using Nen.

These principles describe basic aura control, not a person’s category. For example, Ren is one of the four principles; it is not a seventh category.
The six Nen categories
The glossary divides Nen abilities mainly into six categories. Each describes a broad kind of ability, rather than ranking users by strength.

Terminology can differ across translations: some references call 変化系 “Transformation,” while “Transmutation” is also used in official English localizations. These are alternate names for the same category, not two separate types.
How affinity works
A person’s affinity is not simply a menu of six equally easy skills. Nippon TV’s glossary says that innate talent, personal wishes, and circumstances influence category. Usually one category is the best fit for a user, while other categories can still contribute to development in that user’s own category.

The categories are arranged in an affinity chart. Neighboring categories are more compatible and easier to learn; categories opposite each other are the hardest to learn. The glossary gives no numerical efficiency percentages, so a precise percentage chart should not be treated as established by this reference.
The glossary names Water Divination (水見式) as a way to identify a person’s category. It does not provide numerical test results or a separate procedure in the material cited here.

In and Gyo: two defined applications
In and Gyo are applications of Nen, not additional categories. The official glossary defines them as follows:
- In (隠): An application of Zetsu that hides strong aura so another person does not notice Nen being used.
- Gyo (凝): Concentrates aura refined through Ren around the eyes to detect aura hidden with In.
The retrieved glossary also names other advanced forms, including Shu, En, Ken, Ko, and Ryu, but does not define their mechanics. It therefore supports explanations of the four principles, six categories, In, and Gyo—not a verified, exhaustive guide to every named form.

Where Ren appears in the story
Ren is introduced as a story question in Shueisha’s Volume 6 synopsis: at Heaven’s Arena, Gon and Killua ask what Zushi means by Ren. The volume was released in print on October 4, 1999 (ISBN 4-08-872749-5). The synopsis is useful context for Ren’s place in the story, but it is not a standalone Nen manual.
Shueisha’s listing for the Hunter Association Official Hunter’s Guide describes a broader guide to the characters and world of Hunter × Hunter. The listing does not establish that it contains a complete reference to Nen forms.
