Who counts as a member of The Authority?
The Authority was a WWE storyline power regime built around Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. WWE’s November 2013 retrospective framed Triple H as its commanding figure, Stephanie as his partner in the regime, Randy Orton as its chosen champion, The Shield as its enforcement force, and Kane as Director of Operations. WWE compared the group with Mr. McMahon’s Corporation. WWE’s retrospective describes those roles and connections.
There is no definitive complete roster in the WWE features cited here. The Official Wrestling Museum lists seven core entries: Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, Big Show, Kane, Seth Rollins, J&J Security (Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury), and Randy Orton. It separately identifies Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, Billy Gunn, Road Dogg, and Batista as former members, with other people categorized as allies. The museum’s roster reference supplies that distinction.
This ranking follows that published member and former-member list, placing the seven core entries first and then ranking the five former members in a separate section. The order is editorial, based on importance to defining stories, influence within the faction, contribution to its identity, and role in its formation or decline. A memorable supporting role does not carry the same story weight as leadership or a central championship role.

The Shield requires particular care: WWE described Rollins, Reigns, and Ambrose as a three-person enforcement instrument for Triple H’s regime, but the museum lists Rollins among members and Reigns and Ambrose among former members. Their connection to the Authority is clear; how each is classified depends on the roster boundary being used. Likewise, a Team Authority match appearance is not by itself proof of permanent membership.
Core Authority members, ranked
1. Triple H
Triple H was the regime’s central authority figure and the person around whom its power structure was organized. His command defined the group’s identity and put him at the center of its conflicts. WWE’s comparison with the Corporation also places the Authority in the tradition of an executive-led faction, with Triple H occupying the commanding role.
2. Stephanie McMahon
Stephanie was not merely a prominent associate: WWE described her as Triple H’s partner in the regime. Her position alongside him gave the Authority its joint executive leadership and made the faction’s power feel institutional rather than dependent on one wrestler alone.

3. Randy Orton
Orton was the Authority’s chosen champion and public representative in its early framing. That championship role gave the faction a visible in-ring standard-bearer, connecting executive control to the pursuit and defense of a major prize.

4. Seth Rollins
Rollins was part of The Shield, the three-man force WWE identified as enforcement for Triple H’s regime. His place in the core roster and the Shield’s role made him one of the faction’s most consequential in-ring operators, not simply a supporting presence.
5. Kane
Kane brought a formal title to the organization: Director of Operations. WWE’s November 11, 2013 Raw report explicitly used that designation while discussing his first Raw main event in the role. The position made him the faction’s most legible operational enforcer after The Shield’s force and alliances shifted.

6. Big Show
Big Show appears on the museum’s core-member list, placing him within the wider roster rather than merely among allies. The available WWE retrospective does not assign him an executive or named enforcement role comparable to Triple H, Stephanie, Orton, The Shield, or Kane, so his importance here rests on roster inclusion rather than a claim that he drove the faction’s defining structure.
7. J&J Security: Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury
The museum lists J&J Security as a member entry, comprising Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury. Their security function gave the Authority a recognizable supporting layer around its leaders and in-ring representatives. They rank below the figures with directly documented executive, championship, or major enforcement roles.

Former members, ranked separately
The following five names are identified as former members by the Official Wrestling Museum, rather than as current core members. Their placement recognizes that status without treating all Shield members or match participants as interchangeable full-time members.

1. Dean Ambrose
Ambrose was one of the Shield members WWE described as part of the Authority’s enforcement instrument. The museum’s former-member classification distinguishes him from Rollins in its core roster, but his connection to the faction’s most important enforcement unit makes him the strongest entry in this former-member group.
2. Roman Reigns
Reigns also belonged to The Shield, which WWE identified as a three-person force serving Triple H’s regime. Like Ambrose, he is listed as a former member by the museum rather than among its core entries. His faction significance comes from that enforcement role, not from an assumption that every Shield appearance constituted permanent Authority membership.
3. Batista
Batista appears in the museum’s former-member list. The WWE retrospective cited here does not specify a comparable executive or ongoing enforcement role for him, so his ranking reflects the roster reference’s membership classification rather than a stronger claim about his influence over the group’s defining stories.

4. Road Dogg
Road Dogg is likewise identified as a former member by the museum. The available WWE material does not assign him a role in the Authority’s central leadership, chosen-champion presentation, or named enforcement structure, keeping him below those who shaped those defining elements.
5. Billy Gunn
Billy Gunn rounds out the museum’s former-member list. The sources cited for the Authority’s defining structure do not document a comparable central role for him, so this placement reflects the distinction between roster inclusion and narrative influence.

The Authority’s orbit was larger than its membership list. The museum separates allies from members and former members, and WWE’s November 24, 2014 report illustrates why that matters: after Team Authority lost to Team Cena at Survivor Series, Triple H and Stephanie gave a farewell address. That report also grouped Rollins with possible partners Kane, Jamie Noble, and Joey Mercury for that episode’s match. A match grouping shows association in that event; it does not establish every participant as a permanent faction member. WWE’s November 24, 2014 Raw report documents the farewell and match context.
The Shield’s place is also more nuanced than a simple roster count suggests. WWE’s contemporaneous accounts identify Rollins, Reigns, and Ambrose as the Shield enforcement unit, while the museum’s list treats Rollins as a core member and Reigns and Ambrose as former members. This article preserves both source-based classifications rather than smoothing them into a single claim that all three held identical membership status throughout the Authority’s run. WWE’s November 11, 2013 Raw report uses Kane’s Director of Operations title and provides Shield match context.
How the Authority’s story ended
On November 24, 2014, WWE reported that Triple H and Stephanie said goodbye to the Authority after Team Cena defeated Team Authority at Survivor Series. That farewell marks the faction’s major on-screen transition in the cited chronology; it does not change the distinction between core members, former members, and allies used in this ranking.
