Tron: Ares sends a digital Program out of the Grid and into the human world, reversing the direction of travel that defined earlier films. Disney lists the US theatrical release as October 10, 2025; its advertised home-viewing dates were December 2 for digital purchase, January 6, 2026 for Blu-ray, and January 7, 2026 for Disney+ streaming.
What is Tron: Ares about?
Disney’s official synopsis describes Ares as a sophisticated digital Program sent from the Grid into the real world on a dangerous mission. The encounter marks humankind’s first meeting with AI beings. That premise flips the franchise’s familiar movement into a computer-generated world: here, a being from that world crosses into ours.
Disney’s production notes add that Ares meets Eve Kim, a technologist and ENCOM’s current CEO, who is looking for a critical code written by Kevin Flynn. The two are pursued as they seek a future in which technology and humanity might intersect. That is the studio’s account of the setup; it is separate from an interpretation of what the characters’ choices ultimately mean.
The film’s stated themes
Disney frames the story around Ares’s developing consciousness and conscience, and questions of identity, humanity, and purpose. Director Joachim Rønning described the human question as the emotional center: “For me, it’s the human factor and it’s about Ares and his journey and discovering what it means and what it takes to be human,” he told The Walt Disney Company on October 9, 2025. Producer Justin Springer described the story between Ares and Eve as one of companionship and understanding, suggesting humans and artificial intelligence might learn from one another and coexist. These are the filmmakers’ stated intentions, not a claim about critical consensus.

How does Tron: Ares connect to the earlier films?
Disney presents Tron: Ares as the next chapter in the franchise that began with TRON (1982) and continued with TRON: Legacy (2010). Its Grid, Programs, and Kevin Flynn connect it to those films, while the new story’s central movement—from the digital world into the real one—provides a distinct premise. Jeff Bridges returns as Flynn. The production notes credit Steven Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird as the creators of the characters on which the screenplay is based.
Who is in the cast of Tron: Ares?
Jared Leto plays Ares, Greta Lee plays Eve Kim, and Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn. The credited cast also includes Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson. Joachim Rønning directed.

The Walt Disney Company describes a hybrid production involving practical effects, digital artistry, and collaboration with Industrial Light & Magic. Rønning said a lightcycle chase was filmed in Vancouver: “We shut down downtown Vancouver for six weeks of nights, and then we built the real lightcycles and other vehicles… I think you can really feel it in the film that we went to that extent to try and do as much of it as possible for real.” This is the director’s account, published by Disney, rather than an independently audited production record.
