He became an original member of Bullet Club in 2013 and later reunited with his brother, Tanga Loa, as Guerrillas of Destiny.
What Tama Tonga did before wrestling
Tama Tonga’s official biography says he began his wrestling career after six years of service in the United States Air Force. Tonga also gave that length of service in a 2014 interview. Neither source establishes exact enlistment or discharge dates, so the clearest account is the duration he has publicly described.
In the same 2014 Q&A, Tonga said the Air Force taught him discipline, writing, “For sure. #1. Descipline” (spelling as published). Culture Crossfire’s 2014 Q&A also describes him as a professional wrestler since 2008.
How he trained and began wrestling
Tonga’s official biography names Haku, Ricky Santana, Bubba Ray Dudley and D-Von Dudley among his trainers. The official Guerrillas of Destiny history gives more detail about the brothers’ early training: they first worked with their father, Haku, and Ricky Santana, then spent an additional year training with Bubba Ray and D-Von in Florida.

Tonga later characterized the Dudleys as a good place to learn wrestling basics and conditioning. He also described Mexico as a learning experience. Those recollections help explain his development, but the available accounts do not establish a complete list of his early bookings or every promotion he worked for.
Why he went to Japan and NJPW
After wrestling in Puerto Rico and Mexico, Tonga found a home with NJPW in 2010, according to his official biography. That was a major step in his career, not his first time wrestling.

A 2017 Sporting News interview offers a personal explanation for how the brothers’ paths diverged: Tonga said they had a WWE tryout, his brother was signed, and he was not. The interview does not establish the tryout’s exact date or terms. Tonga later described his NJPW experience as a “blessing in disguise,” saying it let him learn the promotion’s old-school approach.
How Tama Tonga became an original Bullet Club member
Bullet Club formed in 2013, with Tonga among its original members. In a 2020 interview published by Sportsnavi, he recalled being inexperienced at the time and credited Karl Anderson with teaching him how to work a match and understand the wrestling business. Tonga described the early group as outsiders within NJPW, connected by speaking English and by their experience as foreigners in the promotion.

That account makes Tonga’s role more specific than simply being associated with a famous faction: he was part of its original group and learned through the work of its more experienced members. The interview names Prince Devitt as the leader figure at the faction’s formation, so Tonga is best described as an original member rather than its sole founder or original leader. The 2020 Sportsnavi interview is in Japanese; its recollections should be understood as translated material, not as an independently published English transcript.

Tonga’s official biography describes him as one half of Guerrillas of Destiny and credits the pair with three IWGP Tag Team Championship reigns. That figure is the biography’s stated count; this account does not attempt to reconcile it with other totals that may use different dates or definitions.
The shape of Tonga’s pre-WWE career
Tonga’s route was a series of distinct transitions: military service, training with experienced wrestlers, early work in Puerto Rico and Mexico, a long NJPW chapter, membership in Bullet Club, and a reunion with his brother as Guerrillas of Destiny. The reported WWE tryout did not result in his signing at that time; instead, NJPW became the setting in which he developed his career and formed the teams and alliances that defined his years before WWE.
