Ethel Kennedy died on October 10, 2024, at age 96. The Kennedy family, in a statement reported by the Associated Press, said she died from complications related to a stroke. She was the widow of Robert F. Kennedy, but her own public life included decades of human-rights advocacy and the founding of the Robert & Ethel Kennedy Human Rights Center.
How Ethel Kennedy died
The Robert & Ethel Kennedy Human Rights Center and the family statement reported by the Associated Press said Kennedy’s death followed complications related to a stroke. She was 96.
Her life with Robert F. Kennedy
Born Ethel Skakel in 1928, she married Robert F. Kennedy in 1950. They had 11 children. After Robert Kennedy was assassinated in 1968, Ethel raised their family while continuing to take part in public life. At the time of her death announcement, the family statement cited by the Associated Press said that nine of their children survived her and that she had 34 grandchildren.
Her human-rights work
In the months after her husband’s assassination, Kennedy founded the Robert & Ethel Kennedy Human Rights Center. The organization describes her advocacy across civil rights, labor, Indigenous rights and broader human-rights causes. Her legacy therefore includes both her leadership of a large family after 1968 and sustained public work on social-justice issues.
