Among the three consequential 2006 John Cena–Edge matches documented here, the July Saturday Night’s Main Event bout ranks third, SummerSlam ranks second, and Unforgiven ranks first. The order is subjective: it weighs the finish, title consequences, stipulation, crowd setting, and each match’s role in the feud—not an official WWE ranking or a complete inventory of every match they had.
Why the rivalry mattered
WWE’s Scott Taylor traces the rivalry’s start to New Year’s Revolution 2006, when Edge cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and took his first world title from Cena. WWE’s retrospective also recalls the feud’s personal provocations: a brawl near the Long Island Sound and Edge entering Cena’s childhood home and slapping Cena’s father. Those moments set the stakes beyond the championship, but the ranking below focuses on three documented matches from 2006.
These bouts form a compact escalation: a disqualification win that leaves the title with Edge, a controversial title defense in Cena’s hometown, and a TLC match in Edge’s hometown that ends with Cena winning the championship.
3. Saturday Night’s Main Event — July 15, 2006
John Cena defeats Edge by disqualification
This is the least satisfying of the three as a standalone match payoff, though it serves the feud well as a chapter. WWE’s recap says Cena had Edge trapped in the STFU when Lita interfered and the referee called for the disqualification. Cena won the match, but the result did not transfer Edge’s WWE Championship.

The finish advances the conflict without settling the title contest. WWE reported 17,343 fans at the sold-out American Airlines Arena; that is WWE’s attendance figure for the event, not an independent estimate. The bout ranks third because its most important outcome is what it postpones.
2. SummerSlam 2006
Edge defeats John Cena for the WWE Championship
SummerSlam gives the rivalry a major championship setting: Edge defended the WWE Championship against Cena in Boston, Cena’s hometown. WWE’s match page says Edge used brass knuckles in the win, so the result should not be described as a clean victory.

The hometown context and disputed finish make this a more consequential chapter than the July DQ bout. Edge retains the title, however, so the match intensifies the story rather than delivering its resolution. That combination earns it second place.
1. Unforgiven 2006
John Cena defeats Edge in a TLC match to win the WWE Championship
Unforgiven is the strongest match of the three as a culmination. In Toronto, Edge’s hometown, Cena and Edge met in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match. WWE’s recap says Cena’s Raw status was also at stake if he lost. Cena won after delivering an FU from a ladder through tables, then retrieving the championship.

The stipulation raises the physical stakes, the hometown setting gives Edge a charged obstacle, and the title change supplies a clear payoff to the immediate 2006 championship story. WWE reported 16,105 attendees at the Air Canada Centre in 2006. That figure is WWE’s own event report.

This is a ranking of three consequential, source-documented 2006 singles matches—not a claim that they are every major match in the full Cena–Edge rivalry. WWE identifies the rivalry as one of Cena’s greatest, but the available match records here do not establish an exhaustive list across their entire history. The placement is editorial judgment; WWE’s records support the results, match details, and event context, not a comparative critical verdict.
