Spoilers ahead for Deadpool & Wolverine. The film’s most prominent surprise returns include Wesley Snipes as Blade, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Chris Evans as Johnny Storm, and Channing Tatum as Gambit. Their scenes bring performers back to earlier Marvel screen roles—and, in Tatum’s case, give a long-delayed character project a chance to appear on screen. This is a guide to those prominent returns, not a definitive count of every background appearance, voice role, archival image, or Deadpool variant.
Who makes the most notable cameo appearances?
The film’s central legacy-character returns are four familiar faces from earlier Marvel adaptations. Chris Evans’s appearance is a role-reveal surprise; Garner and Snipes reprise established characters; and Tatum’s Gambit carries the story of a film project that never reached production. TIME’s spoiler-marked guide and Variety’s interview with director Shawn Levy discuss these returns.

| Chris Evans | Johnny Storm / Human Torch | Fox’s mid-2000s Fantastic Four films | The reveal is that Evans returns as Johnny Storm—not as Steve Rogers / Captain America. |
| Jennifer Garner | Elektra | Daredevil and Elektra | She reprises the assassin she played in those earlier films. |
| Wesley Snipes | Blade | The earlier Blade film trilogy | His appearance revisits one of Marvel’s best-known pre-MCU screen roles. |
| Channing Tatum | Gambit | A Gambit film project associated with Tatum that was never produced | The character finally appears on screen with Tatum in the role. |
Chris Evans returns as Johnny Storm, not Captain America
Evans plays Johnny Storm, the Human Torch from Fox’s Fantastic Four films. The casting works as a deliberate misdirection for viewers who chiefly associate him with Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The surprise is a return to an earlier superhero role, not a Captain America appearance. Variety identifies the appearance as a reprise of Evans’s Fox-era role.
Jennifer Garner reprises Elektra
Garner returns as Elektra, the assassin she played in Daredevil and the solo film Elektra. Her cameo is part of the film’s return to characters from Marvel adaptations made before the current MCU era. TIME and Variety cover her return.

- Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake yet. His days as Deadpool behind him, a listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. But when his homeworld is threatened, he reluctantly suits up as he tries to convince Wolverine? oh hell, just watch. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
Wesley Snipes comes back as Blade
Snipes reprises the role he played in the earlier Blade trilogy. In the film, Blade says, “There’s only ever been one Blade. There’s only ever going to be one.” The line is a joke about the franchise, delivered by the character; it should not be read as a real-world statement about the future of the role. TIME discusses the exchange.
Channing Tatum finally plays Gambit
Tatum’s appearance gives him an on-screen turn as Gambit after a long association with a planned Gambit movie that was never made. That history makes this return different from a straightforward reprise: the cameo also serves as a payoff to a character project that did not reach production. Variety gives the project’s broader context, while the Motion Picture Association’s interview with screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick discusses the production’s casting story.

How the surprise appearances came together
Director Shawn Levy told Variety that he and Ryan Reynolds personally approached actors about surprise casting. That behind-the-scenes detail helps explain why the returns feel tied to particular performers and earlier roles, rather than functioning only as anonymous nods to Marvel history. No definitive total is established here. The four returns above are prominent cameos supported by the cited coverage, but they are not a frame-by-frame catalogue of every background appearance, voice contribution, archival image, or Deadpool variant. A complete inventory would require checking the film and its credits scene by scene; treat this as a focused guide to major legacy-character returns, not an exhaustive count.
