In September 2022, showrunner Eric Kripke rebuked people harassing her and told them to stop watching; co-stars Jack Quaid and Antony Starr expressed support for Moriarty. A separate controversy followed in January 2024, when Moriarty responded to Megyn Kelly’s claims about her appearance. The events are related by the online scrutiny she faced, but they should not be conflated.
What happened in 2022?
In September 2022, Moriarty shared an essay by a fan about the way some viewers discussed her and her character, Starlight. She said she felt “silenced” and “dehumanized,” and described the effects of misogynistic online trolling focused on both her portrayal and her appearance. Moriarty also noted that people change physically and mentally.

Showrunner Eric Kripke responded to the harassing trolls. In a statement reported by Variety Australia, he wrote: “Be kind. If you can’t be kind, then eat a bag of dicks, fuck off to the sun & don’t watch ‘The Boys,’ we don’t want you.” His profane rebuke was directed at people harassing Moriarty—not a threat from a co-star to fans generally.
How did Moriarty’s co-stars respond?
Quaid posted a message of support: “Love you Erin. We’re all here for you.” Variety also reported support from Antony Starr. The cited coverage describes the co-stars’ messages as backing Moriarty; it does not report that they threatened fans. The Independent’s 2022 report covered Moriarty’s statement and Kripke’s response.

What was the separate controversy in 2024?
In January 2024, podcast host Megyn Kelly discussed Moriarty’s appearance and alleged cosmetic procedures. Moriarty disputed the comparison images: she said the older photograph was about a decade old and the newer one showed her after makeup involving major contouring. She described the ensuing reaction as harassment and said she was stepping away from social media, calling it an “extensive if not permanent” break.
Those details are Moriarty’s account of the images and her response, not an independent finding about cosmetic procedures. The Los Angeles Times reported supportive comments from Kripke, Quaid, and Laurie Holden; The Independent also reported support from Quaid and Chace Crawford. Moriarty wrote, “It’s broken my heart. You’ve broken my heart.”

What later reporting adds—and what it does not establish
A 2026 retrospective by The Daily Beast/The Looker described Moriarty later writing about Graves’ disease, chronic illness, and the distress of having symptoms publicly speculated about and dismissed. Moriarty characterized her experience as “the physical hell of chronic illness on a public stage.” That later context is relevant to the harm of public speculation, but it does not establish that a particular earlier image or perceived appearance change was caused by a specific symptom or diagnosis.

- The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under Homelander's muscly thumb as he consolidates his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca's son, and his job as The Boys' leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they must find a way to work together and save the world before it's too late.
What the reporting supports
- In 2022, Moriarty described misogynistic online abuse; Kripke told harassers to be kind or stop watching.
- Her co-stars’ reported responses were supportive, not threats to fans.
- The 2024 dispute involved Kelly’s appearance-related claims and Moriarty’s account of the photos and social-media backlash; the reports do not independently establish whether she had cosmetic procedures.
- Later reporting about Graves’ disease should not be used to diagnose the cause of any particular image or appearance change.
