Eric Church’s April 26, 2024, Stagecoach headline set traded a conventional country-rock festival show for a seated, choir-backed performance built around gospel, spirituals, and covers. Some attendees wanted familiar hits and a full-band set; others welcomed the risk. The available reactions are anecdotal, not a measure of what the whole crowd thought.
What happened during Eric Church’s Stagecoach set?
Church headlined the first night of Stagecoach 2024 in Indio, California, on Friday, April 26. Rather than open with the full-band country-rock format many festivalgoers might expect from a headliner, he performed seated on a stool with a choir. His band joined near the end.
Setlist.fm reported a roughly 90-minute performance with 31 songs, including 21 covers (2024); that is the outlet’s count, not an independently audited setlist tally. The repertoire mixed Church originals with gospel standards, spirituals, and unexpected pop and hip-hop choices.
| Part of the set | Examples documented in coverage or the performance transcript |
|---|---|
| Church originals | “Mistress Named Music,” “Sinners Like Me,” “Like Jesus Does,” and “Springsteen” |
| Gospel and spirituals | “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “This Little Light of Mine,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” and “I’ll Fly Away” |
| Other covers | Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice,” and 2Pac’s “California Love” |

Why did the gospel-heavy approach surprise some fans?
The mismatch was between the expectations a country-festival headlining slot can create and the performance Church chose: choir-led and acoustic in presentation, unusually cover-heavy, and not centered on a run of familiar originals with a full band. That contrast offers a plausible context for the disappointment described in coverage, but it cannot explain every individual reaction or departure.
Holler reported that some attendees left and quoted sharply negative and positive audience comments. One fan described it as “the most disappointing musical performance I’ve experienced in my life”; the same outlet also recorded fans saying they loved it. These are examples of social comments reported by Holler, not representative audience data. No attendance poll or representative survey establishes how many people liked or disliked the set.

Why did Church choose a choir and spirituals?
In a statement after the performance, as reported by setlist.fm, Church said the set was the most difficult he had attempted. He described tracing musical influences back through Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, and Willie Nelson to what he called “the origin,” adding that taking a choir and returning to that “purest form” felt right in that moment.
Church also framed the choice as creative risk. “I’ve always been the one that’s like, ‘let’s do something really, really strange and weird and take a chance,’” he said, according to setlist.fm. He acknowledged that such risks sometimes do not work, but argued that challenging himself keeps his work on a sharper creative edge. That explains his stated intention; it does not establish that every attendee understood or welcomed it.

Did Church address the backlash?
Church made the post-performance comments about the difficulty of the set, tracing the music to its roots, and taking creative chances. The statements reported by setlist.fm explain why he staged the performance; they are not evidence of a separate apology or a direct response to each fan complaint.

PBS hosts a transcripted performance recording that can be used to check the songs and the ending. Church’s official site announced on May 3, 2024, that Church Choir members could access the full performance and that selected songs were available on YouTube. That announcement records what the site offered at the time; it does not confirm that the same access conditions remain in effect.
