The account traces that anecdote to a New York Times feature; the underlying Times story is not available here to verify the chart or its context. Futurism also quoted Musk’s longtime friend David Marglin describing “mild exploratory journeys” with him. Those are attributed reports, not independently confirmed evidence that either drug is safer than alcohol or an established treatment.
What did the report say?
In an article published on October 12, 2022, Futurism said the New York Times had reported that Musk passed around a chart purporting to show MDMA and psilocybin as healthier choices than alcohol. Because the Times feature could not be accessed for this account, the chart’s contents, source and context cannot be independently checked here.
Futurism also quoted David Marglin, described as a longtime friend of Musk: “I have been with him on mild exploratory journeys.” Marglin added, “Nothing out of control or wild,” describing all-night gatherings with dancing and revelry. These statements are Marglin’s account as reported by Futurism; the available sources do not independently corroborate them.
Did Musk say psychedelics helped people?
Futurism reproduced Musk’s public support for openness to psychedelics and reported a social-media statement in which he compared people he had heard from about psychedelics and ketamine with people helped by SSRIs and amphetamines. These are reported opinions and anecdotes. They do not establish how well a drug works, how often it helps, or whether its benefits outweigh its risks for a broader population.
#1 Best Overall
- CREDIBLE: This test is CLIA Waived for home or over the counter (OTC) use, utilizes the same technology as lab screening tests, and its results are accepted in most professional and clinical settings.
- COMPREHENSIVE: This lab-grade test can detect 14 drugs simultaneously: Buprenorphine (BUP), Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), Opiates (OPI - 2000 ng/mL cut-off level), Amphetamine (AMP), Barbiturates (BAR), Benzodiazepines (BZO), Cocaine (COC), Methamphetamine (MET), Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), Methadone (MTD), Oxycodone (OXY), Phencyclidine (PCP), Propoxyphene (PPX), and Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA).
- ACCURATE: More than 99% accurate, it uses lab-recommended cutoff levels for each drug and includes a temperature strip to verify the temperature of the fresh sample for Specimen Validity Testing.
- EASY TO USE: To use, simply remove the cap, collect urine in the test cup, wait a FULL 5 minutes, and then read the result; disposable plastic gloves are included, a negative result shows two lines, a positive result shows only the control line, a faint test line still means negative, and results should not be read after 5 minutes.
Are shrooms or MDMA safer than alcohol?
The report does not establish that. It describes a chart said to make that comparison, but the underlying chart and its methodology are not verifiable from the available account. The cited FDA material addresses psychedelic drug development, not a direct comparison with alcohol or the safety of unsupervised use.
A meaningful comparison would need to specify what “safer” means, the substance and dose, the setting and population, and which harms are being measured. No directly relevant statistic or comparative figure is provided in the cited sources, so the anecdote cannot support a general safety ranking.

What does the FDA say about psychedelic treatments?
In a June 23, 2023 announcement about draft guidance for clinical trials, the FDA described psychedelic drugs as investigational products that showed “initial promise” as potential treatments for mood, anxiety and substance-use disorders. The announcement discussed clinical research involving conditions including depression and PTSD. It was not an approval decision and does not establish psychedelics as treatments for consumers.
The FDA said psychedelic drugs must meet the same evidentiary standard as other drugs. Its announcement highlighted questions that clinical research needs to address:

- PRECISE AND RELIABLE: Reliable drug test detecting five widely-used substances,Amphetamine (AMP)-1000 ng/mL, Oxazepam(BZO)-300 ng/mL, Cocaine (COC)-300 ng/mL, Morphine (OPI 2000)-2000 ng/mL, Cannabinoids (THC)-50 ng/mL.
- EASY TO USE AND QUICK RESULTS: Remove the cap and dip the test into urine for 10 seconds. Please read the result in 5 minutes, not later. If two lines are present, it's a negative result; if only the control line appears, it's positive.
- Home Testing with High Precision: This home urine drug test kit allow you to conveniently and privately test as often as you want from the comfort of home.
- Perfect for home personal testing and families test need, random workplace testing, or preparation for Pre-employment screening.
- FRIENDLY REMINDER FOR OUR VALUED CUSTOMERS: Please do not test with any liquid other than HUMAN URINE. Testing with any other substance, such as water, is very likely to produce incorrect/unreliable outcomes.
- Trial design and controls: studies need methods that can reliably assess whether an intervention produces an effect.
- Safety monitoring: researchers need to track risks during trials.
- Psychotherapy: where therapy is part of the intervention, its role needs careful evaluation.
- Dose and durability: studies need to examine dose-response and how long any measured effects last.
Tiffany Farchione, M.D., director of the FDA’s Division of Psychiatry, said: “Psychedelic drugs show initial promise as potential treatments for mood, anxiety and substance use disorders. However, these are still investigational products.”

What can readers conclude?
- The claim about a chart comes through Futurism’s account of a New York Times feature; the chart itself is not independently verified here.
- Marglin’s comments are attributed testimony, not independent confirmation of Musk’s personal use.
- Anecdotes about people helped by psychedelics or ketamine are not clinical findings.
- The FDA’s June 2023 announcement concerns investigational drug development, not a finding that psilocybin or MDMA is safer than alcohol.
